So my car needs a new cabin air blower installed. It's a 2004 X3 2.5i. The blower stopped working. I've checked all the fuses and even replaced my FSU but still no air. The motor was making noise and chirping and running rough / variably before it failed so I wasn't surprised but now it needs to be done. I have the new blower parts already but am looking for good instructions on how to install it exactly. I have a friend willing to assist me and we should have all the tools needed but just need some guidance. If anyone out there can help, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

ps ....as you will see this job is mostly leggo type work....don't be intimidated by all the plastic covers .....it's no where near rebuilding an engine or trans

this is only for the full monty .....from the car inside.....much much leggo to work with.....blower/heat and ac cores....but good to keep.....your X should hopefully be doable like the 46 330 from the engine rear

Chances are you have to undo the big wiring bridge over cylinder 5 & 6 and move it out of the way to access the blower motor.

Well, it's done and it all worked out fine. I couldn't find a working camera when I went to do the work so it's not documented but all in all, it went smoothly in accordance with swampx3's posted youtube (and I also had a mechanic friend of mine supply me with the alldata printout for the procedure as well) video except for one difference that's not apparent in the video; the cabin air filter cover in my car seemed to be attached (one piece) to the plastic guard that runs across the bottom of the windshield and sits in behind the wiper arms so those had to also come off to remove that plastic cover piece to make room. But it wasn't too bad. And I have AC now more importantly! I had also swapped the FSU in my earlier troubleshooting so now I have both components brand new. Thanks for your input everyone! Much appreciated.

Yes I tested the fan to ensure it worked. The only tip was really getting the orientation of everything right before re-installing and make sure you use a magnetic retrieval tool so you don't lose any screws down below while working cause that would probably be disastrous.

The devil is always in the detail though. I've done this job on an E36 and there wasn't much to remove above the blower. The blower itself was a pig to get out but there was no wiring bridge etc to remove.

Thanks for this thread. After some readings I'm now convinced I found the cause of this annoying noise!

So now let's shop for a unit. There's plenty of after market brands: NRA, Dassis, Nissens (see link below). Should I go for the more expensive one Hella to be on the safe side?

I had fear but it sounds more lego than mechanic, glad I don't have to unwire anything at the cylinder bay, did it 2 years ago for the seal, not so keen to repeat that now...

I can't buy bmw on alldata, do the pros get access we can't?
