I'm super excited about this car. I have made sure to get, in writing, that the dealership does have an allocation. I have asked for the production number and VIN when available. I have asked for the build week.

Someone mentioned that I list all my questions in one post so here goes:

What is the estimated build time / delivery time?

What should I be doing to track the build process?

How many miles until the engine is broken in?

How should the car be driven during the break in period?

What are the best all weather floor mats to get?

What are things you guys have bought for your car?

Coding: I'm pretty good with computers...can I do it myself to save money or is there a chance I will mess it all up and make the car a brick?

Coding: How often will I have to keep up with this? Will dealership reset everything at each visit (oil change, brake pads, etc)?

Paint protection: Should I have a coat of wax or anything placed as soon as I get it?

Suspension Modes: When can I change between the modes of the car (Eco pro, comfort, sport, sport+)? At a full stop, under a certain speed limit? When I use the buttons by the shifter to change, will that change my suspension too since I have the Adaptive M Suspension?

Cleaner: What brand of spot cleaner do you guys keep in the car? The stuff where you just spray on the body of the car and wipe.

Delivery: What all do I need to check, inspect, and test before I accept the car?

Is there a specific BMW new car scent air freshener? I won't use any until original smell fades away.

What does everyone keep in their glove box?

Can I stream audio from my iPhone to the car via Bluetooth or do I need a cable?

Looking forward to what everyone has to say. You don't need to reply if someone has answered the question. I will most likely come up with more questions so please keep an eye out.

My delivery time was 4 weeks.

My dealer said to drive moderately first 1000 miles.

I bought BMW all weather mats. Hated them. Bought Weathertech. Great!

Dealer said no wax for first month.

I closely inspect inside and outside for any flaws. I'm paying for a near perfect car.

I use mineral spirits to get gunk off paint. Follow up with a damp cloth. I use a good grade of leather cleaner on the inside.

I play music via Bluetooth. Also, I have downloaded my music into the car hard drive.

I found address book updates on the iPhone show up n the car address book seamlessly.

Don't put water in the windshield washer tank. It grows stuff that will clog pump.

Use a recommended brand of high octane gas.

What is the estimated build time / delivery time?

Build time from start to finish is about 5 days, delivery time is typically 3 to 4 weeks or longer depending on where you are located. The factory is in SC.

What should I be doing to track the build process?

Once your car goes into production, a production number or a VIN should be available. Contact your sales guy for this information. Go to bmwusa.com and sign up for my bmw and everything else should be self explanatory.

How many miles until the engine is broken in?

According to the manual 1,200 miles.

How should the car be driven during the break in period?

Keep RPM's under 4K and vary speeds.. avoid using cruise control as this would keep your RPM and speed constant for long periods.

What are the best all weather floor mats to get?

This is subjective... most get the BMW branded weather tech mats.

What are things you guys have bought for your car?

First thing I got for my X5 was the all gloss black front grills price is around $125 to $150 a set. If you have the MSport line, this grill really brings out the front look of the X5 by eliminating the chrome which looks out of place on a Msport line.

Picked up side ///M emblems

I also purchased the rear trunk spoiler.

Next, I purchased the front spoiler lip

Installed the lip myself to save cost on labor.

Next, I purchased MPPK ( M performance power kit ) which adds 20 horsepower and 32 ft/lb
and increases 0-60 mph time from 6.1 seconds to 5.6 seconds.

After install you can verify it by going to your sports gauge and it will read Max at 400 HP / 400 TQ

You also get a badge for your engine bay as follows.

Also purchased race chip piggyback tune from RGSport

I then installed MPE ( M performance Exhaust ) to compliment the MPPK and the exhaust sound is noticeably louder.

Stock exhaust video.. Notice only the driver side exhaust is opened and the passenger side opens up only at certain RPM range.. I believe it is 3K and up.

MPE exhaust video, note both exhausts are opened full time.

I also purchased the rear carbon fiber diffuser and had the dealer install it while installing the exhaust.

Coding: I'm pretty good with computers...can I do it my self to save money or is there a chance I will mess it all up and make the car a brick?

You can, check out the all you need to know about coding thread here http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1033991

You need to purchase a cable that connects to the car.

Coding: How often will I have to keep up with this? Will dealership reset everything at each visit (oil change, brake pads, etc)?

My understanding is that you only need to recode when the dealer does a software update. Not during oil change or regular maintenance routines.

Paint protection: Should I have a coat of wax or anything placed as soon as I get it?

You can apply protection right away. Paint is fully cured when the X5 leaves the factory.
What I did was purchase a nano mitt ( clay ) and applied Opti-coat gloss for a glass like shine.

Nanoskin Auto scrub -Fine Grade wash mitt
http://www.autogeek.net/nanoskin-aut...ine-grade.html
Acts as a clay bar or better..

Lubricant for the Nanoskin Auto scrub
http://www.autogeek.net/nanoskin-glide-lubricant.html
Needed to use with the nanoskin.. dilute with water and use in a spray bottle.

Optimum Gloss Coat is now available in a 20 cc size! This gives you enough product to coat a full size SUV or two average sized vehicles.
http://www.autogeek.net/optimum-glos...t-coating.html

My method is as follows

1. Wash & Rinse
2. Use the nanoskin clay mitt on the whole surface of the X5 using the nanoskin glide lubricant to remove all contaminant.
3. Rinse and dry
4. Apply Rubbing alcohol to remove any residue of previous wax/sealant etc.
5. Apply opti-gloss coat as suggested.

The whole process took about 3 hours.

Suspension Modes: When can I change between the modes of the car (Eco pro, comfort, sport, sport+)? At a full stop, under a certain speed limit? When I use the buttons by the shifter to change, will that change my suspension too since I have the Adaptive M Suspension?

Suspension change can be changed at all speeds. As mentioned before you need to make sure to change the settings on your suspension by going into settings > Driving Mode > Configure Sport > Make sure Chassis is clicked for suspension and drivetrain for steering and transmission changes.

Cleaner: What brand of spot cleaner do you guys keep in the car? The stuff where you just spray on the body of the car and wipe.

See above opt-coat and I also use

Delivery: What all do I need to check, inspect, and test before I accept the car?

Inspect all visual, make sure you have all the carpet mats, cargo net in the left secret compartment in the trunk, make sure all he lights and drive functions are working.

Is there a specific BMW new car scent air freshener? I won't use any until original smell fades away.

No idea. I may be a minority here but I actually hate the new car smell.. it smells toxic to me.

What does everyone keep in their glove box?

Napkins, gloves, and misc stuff.

Can I stream audio from my iPhone to the car via Bluetooth or do I need a cable?

I cant answer any of the ordering questions as I took mine off the lot. Since X5s are made in the US it does not take nearly as long as cars coming from germany. Total time depends on when the build week is (basically when it starts being built).

For break in period, people on these boards typically say something like 1000 to 1200 miles. During this period, the normal recommendations are to:

1. Not push the RPMS past 4500-5000 or so and
2. Do not drive for an extended period of time with the rpms at a constant setting (eg, cruise control for an hours long drive). Recommendations generally are to make sure you are varying the RPMs like normal regular driving to make sure the parts have a chance to set. Whether this is necessary or not has been debated quite a bit. I just drive, personally, and make sure not to use cruise control for a set speed for the first 1000 miles.

Coding: If you are pretty good with computers, and good with following instructions, it is something you can do yourself. Yes, if you dont follow the instructions it is possible to brick your car, if you dont follow the instructions regarding power to the car and you code certain modules... not LIKELY, but possible.

Wether you have to keep recoding it when you take it to the dealer really depends on if the dealer updates software when you take it in for service. They will normally check for any recall work or open service bulletins and perform those when you go in for service (Here where I am, even oil changes are basically like "here take this loaner and see you tomorrow". I dont push them to finish while I wait cause I WANT them to check stuff). With that being said, if they dont update the specific module you coded, it will be unchanged.

These cars are basically rolling computers, and there isnt one computer module, there are quite a few that control different things. Coding the car is a bit like editing a windows registry, with the exception that you need special software and a cable to do it, and the car thinks in german.

I am not anal about car care, so not the right person to discuss that. I like a clean car, but we have a mobile detailer that comes to my job to wash the company cars, and also will wash / wax / detail personal cars for a fee. I just do that. Others wont let someone touch their car, but thats not me. I did have the car detailed about a month after I got it, to get a good coat of wax on it but I paid the detailer to do it.

Car modes can be changed at any time, while moving, etc. I do it all the time, and yes if you have the adaptive M suspension it changes that at the same time. Since you will have adaptive M suspension you will have the option of setting the suspension to be stiffer in sport mode (default) along with the sport mode shift points, or have the suspension be the comfort mode settings with the sport mode shift points.

I keep my registration in my glove box, along with a piece of paper that has my doctors name and address, along with a car cellphone charger. Dont need "gloves" here in southern cali (well my wife does sometimes but /shrug lol.. ) I keep the glove box locked though.

You can stream audio via bluetooth, or use the cable that comes with the phone (like a lightning cable). The cable sounds better though. You dont need to buy a special BMW cable, just use the regular one from your phone in the USB port.

You will not be able to use BMW APPS wirelessly on a 2016 though, which means while you can listen to pandora wirelessly through bluetooth, if you want to be able to thumbs up or down, or change stations on it through the idrive you will need to be using the phone cable connected to the USB. On a 2017, it will have an all new iDrive system which will allow you to do this wirelessly.

The 2017 Idrive system is supposed to have a new interface, and also have apple car play available starting in august. If it were me, I would get a 2017 but I am a tech guy and would want the absolute latest tech... and not care too much about the missing possible brake job from the 2017 maintenance, since the warranty is not changing, only maintenance.

I think thats all I can answer. I hope you got a good deal on the car. If you took as much time working on the deal as you are looking at these other things, I bet you got a good deal indeed!

The only thing I can add is what I've been trained and tell people about break-in:

  1. Drive it like you would normally. The computer wants to learn how you drive.
  2. Don't exceed 5,000 RPM for any extended period (i.e. ok on a long on ramp, not OK on a long drive)
  3. Keep the speed limit under 100
  4. Brakes and tire are fresh. for the first 250 miles you might find them both to be grabby in dry weather and slippery when in wet weather. Give yourself a little extra braking space.
  5. Enjoy it! But, drive it like you own it, not like you stole it.

Awesome work. Gotta talk the wife into allowing me to do these mods!

Is the MPPK a chip mod or something that is physically installed onto the car?

MPPK is a software mod no hardware.. And before you ask, no, it can not be coded :)
Racechip is is a chip tune which I stacked on top of my MPPK tune. I can safely say that I'm probably at 350HP and 375 - 390TQ on my 35i.

According to the BMW tracking page, my car just went into production. My CA said I should be able to pick it up at the end of the month! I hate this waiting and have pretty much read everything about the car. Any suggestions to stay busy?
