Mod one: paint cup holder to mask scratches. I purchased some vinyl paint from AutoZone and painted my cup holders. The result was better, but still not as good as I was expecting. The undesired result could be because of personal error, poor technique or bad paint. Most likely the fault rests in a combination of all the aforementioned factors.

Mod 2: Paint chrome grille. The grille was the only part in my car that was chrome. Nothing else besides the model lettering looked like chrome. Not only do I dislike chrome on cars, but also aesthetically it didn't make sense to have chrome grills.

Tools: 120 sand paper, duplicolor primer, duplicolor semi gloss black paint, gloves.

Due to poor technique, there were a few streak lines on the inside area of the grills. You have to come two inches close to the grills to see them, but they are there. Overall I'm happy with the black grilles.

Future simple mod: smoked corners.

A quick question, has anybody covered their cold air intake box with aluminum foil? I saw on e46fanatics where some guy had done it and the box was staying cool. What do you all think about that?

Looks good /if not perfect (to you) to others it is prob not noticable /some tend to be over picky on mods small imperfections bug us/but the price of a spray can is better than the 30.00 for cupholder and 50.00 for the grills.

Thank you all.

Your mods are more complicated than simple painting so don't feel too bad.

LOL !... I fear simple painting at this point ! !... And am starting to dread the time when DIY repairs come due...If it says "should take two hours to complete" I will plan for the entire day and part of the next one, from here on out...

Lucky for me I have a truck and two motorcycles to get around in during my disasters !...

Nice - I need to repaint my gloss black grilles that I got from Bimmian. Paint is all bubbled/chipped.

Cupholders are relatively inexpensive. A year or so ago I just replaced my cupholders and whole center console area since it wasn't looking so great.

You guys are being too hard on yourselves! The only way to learn things is by doing. The hard part is getting the [email protected] to try something, and you guys have that part solved. The mark of a true craftsman is not always how they do the job, it is in how well they hide their errors!

Very nice. Cupholders look great after.
Haha, when I was taking pictures of the grill with the intention to post them online, I told myself : Jake will not like the black girll. :D. Your chrome grill looks good; mine looked out of place.

Anybody have an opinion on the cold air intake box idea?

FYI, if you use adhesion promoter (found on same isle as vinyl paint) first, it sticks much better. I also found that black bumper trim paint is stronger for these projects. I painted my whole console black with it (and it used to be tan), and it still looks factory almost a year later.
