When they replaced my timing chain in May they said the 2 year warranty wouldn't apply because the work was done under CPO and that expires February 2018.

Remove the oil fill cap. You can see the timing chain and guide. If it's orange the guide is an old model. If it's white it has the updated guide. If you decide to buy the X3 with the orange guide I am of the opinion it is not if it will fail but when.

This is not correct. The new guide will change colors due to environmental conditions/oil.
