Just get an M2000 rated helmet, or if you want to be very cheap get an M95 (like I did). I don't really think there is any need for a Nomex lined helmet at the driving school level.

I prefer a full face helmet though. The M95 is very nice and light too.

I would get gloves too. After using them on the street and at auto-x, I really like them. Driving shoes would be nice, I don't have them. Practice your heel-toe, nice to use if you are good at it :D

www.racerwholesale.com sells some good stuff...

I have a basic full face Bell M1 that I bought at www.bellhelmets.com for $85

I would NOT get an M certified helemt for auto use. Get an SA rated helmet.

There is a difference in how they test impact ratings for the different ratings. M helmets are for single impact and sliding. SA helmets for multiple impacts (head moving around in car).

Als SA rated helmets use fire resistant/retardant materials.

For autocross, it is not a big deal, for track days it is.

Also many track days will not allow M rated helemts, so buy the right one first and not have to do it again.

Anyone know of a dealer in LA (preferably in the South Bay area) where I can pick up an SA2000 rated helmet?

One of the schools also said I need gloves, but didn't say anything more. Any recommendations for gloves?

At least for the NCC chapter of the CCA, to do a drivers school, you are required to have an Snell SA1995 or later helmet. You cannot do a drivers school with an M helmet. You can use an M to autox though.

As someone else suggested, I'll get an SA rated helmet rather than an M because not every school will accept an M helmet. I think I'll also get a collar just to be sure. Don't know about the gloves yet.

But, I'd still like a lead on getting all the goodies from someplace local to me (LA Beach Cities) rather than mail order, if possible. I'd like to be able to try things on before I plunk down the cash.
