Always use at the very least the minimum required octane for your vehicle. I always try to use shell vpower 93 in my car. Although I doubt the gas caused this issue, over time using lower octane will damage your vehicle.

Although premium is better, the 330i will run OK on 87 AKI as the timing will be adjusted if necessary. Unless the gas contained water or some other impurity, that's not where your problem lies.
