Hello, my 2011 328i coupe was unfortunately built during the few months when they downgraded the stereo system. I don't have any tweeters at all, only mid-range door speakers. Sound quality is greatly compromised.

What should I do? Would replacing the factory door speakers from BMW or someone else help? Are there any of the same size door speakers that could compensate for the lack of tweeters in my car?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't know much about speakers, so please talk to me as if I know nothing. Thanks!

The fix for these is well documented

The fix for these is well documented and there are many solutions
but you have to change or add more than speakers to get a nice stereo in
these cars. What fits tends to be more exotic than your standard stuff
like pioneer and alpine. There are now some aftermarket BMW specific speakers but they tend
to be designed for the stock amps and won't be a good choice for and aftermaket
amp setup due to power matching.

The brands that are considered good for speakers are Jehnert , Morel and Gladen
Jehnert and Gladen make BMW specific speakers that are great and will handle
aftermarket amp power.
Amps or amp processors Helix, Jl Audio, ARc and Mosconi

There is a stereo e90 forum at the following link

http://www.e90post.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27

The basic thread for upgrading is

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=641323

The basic upgrade for a non amped stereo system is

upgrade the front doors and floors , add an amp , use a technic harness
and with the base system you need to use a cleansweep or processor to compensate
for the boosted eq the factory head unit has due to lack of tweeters.
Or recode the Head Unit or I drive for hi Fi output.
Also you should need to identify your system because in 2011 there are
two non pay for it options for stereo if you got the Hi Fi it would be easier but
the lack of tweeters says you don't have Hi fi but the base system as you stated.
The BMW tweeter pods are pretty cheap an easy to install also .
Most audio shops do not no how to do a BMW correctly .

5th link down is the basic upgrade I am talking about above.

As ctuna has posted, there are plenty of options. It all depends on how much money you want to spend.

For a very simple upgrade, do 2 things: (1) upgrade the speakers and (2) add an aftermarket amplifier. For (1), I suggest the MB Quart speakers:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/mb-quar...lack/4395042.p?id=1219098068797&skuId=4395042

which upgrades the tweeters, the midranges, and the woofers. Focal also offers upgrades for all 3 - they have one kit with the tweeter and midrange and another for the woofer.

For (2), get Technic's harness and the JL Audio XD600/6.

These 2 changes will make a huge difference.

The OP has no tweeters to "upgrade"; without wiring and new door frame pieces, this speaker set is useless.

The woofers don't actually need upgrading; they just need power, that's why the separate amp is recommended.

I went a slightly different route than some of the solutions ctuna mentioned - I got the European Alpine upgrade kit (which is mentioned in some of his links), which includes tweeters and midrange door speakers, and an amp (I had to order the door trims separately). IMO, just buying midrange upgrades will not result in a satisfactory sound. You need the tweeters, and you need the amp for woofer performance.

FYI, I ended up paying ~$600 for the pieces, and I decided to have someone else do the install as it's not a slam dunk.

Thanks for your replies. I will look at all of the links as soon as I can.

I guess I was hoping that someone knew about some door speakers that were a mid-range and tweeter combo, since there isn't anywhere for me to install tweeters separately.

I will look at the links you posted. Thanks everyone!
