Hi, all there~ Greeting from Perth, Australia~

I'm a owner of a 2002 BMW 318i E46. Recently my automatic gearbox turns faulty as I cannot drive it over 50km/h. The mechanic guy quoted over 1500 AUD to recondition it. Meanwhile, he suggested seeking a second-hand gearbox to replace it, which saves almost half.

I did some researching to know that my car has a N42 2.0L engine, and E46s before 2001 are equipped with M43 1.8L engine. As it's a bit hard to find a good transmission off cars after 2001 in my city, can I use a transmission which matches a M43 engine? If yes, will it be easy to replace? Any extra part do I need to make the replacement successful?

What about another transmission matching a M44 1.9L engine?

Thanks!

To find an interchangeable transmission is go by the VIN numbers. Some 5 series have the same transmission of 3 series. By the way, do you fault code from the transmission? Some problem of transmission can be fix just replacing the solenoids or replacing the fluid and filter/gasket.
