Hi everyone im a new E39 M5 owner as of a few days ago. I have a 2001 with 85k on it and a Dinan package. Wondering what I should be looking to repair/recommendations on first steps to make this car mechanically sound?
First step with these cars is to make sure the electrical system is in good shape starting with the battery, test at the jump terminals under the bonnet, your looking for over 12v with the ignition and lights on but engine off and with the engine started it should be over 14v.
If your a hands on kind of chap then give the car a complete service (regardless of paperwork or what you've been told), this way you have a known starting point for your maintenance schedule and know the correct fluids and filters have been used, while the car is in the air rock the wheels to check the wheel bearings and take a look at all the rubber bushings for the suspension components to check for cracks etc, you'll also be able to identify any possible oil leaks that may have been hidden from view when looking in from the bonnet area.
Also check to make sure your water drains are clear of debris from under the cabin filters and from the bottom of the ecu box and brake booster wells.
The above items are just general things to check and do on this era of BMW's but throw a post up in this forum for specific things to watch for on your model but absolutely and most importantly, get out there and have fun in your new ride .
