There is a new recall for 325xi:
SafetyAlerts
April 2, 2002
BMW Has Recalled the 2002 BMW 325XI
(SafetyAlerts) - BMW Has Recalled the 2002 BMW 325XI because of a manufacturing problem with the rear brake rotors.
Potential Number of Units Affected: 799
Manufactured: 01/2002 - 02/2002
Defect Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES. A PROBLEM IN THE MANUFACTURING PROCESS OF THE REAR BRAKE ROTORS MAY HAVE RESULTED IN THE CREATION OF A CRACK WHERE THE BRAKE DISC AND THE PARKING BRAKE DRUM MEET. FURTHER CRACKING OF THE ROTOR COULD OCCUR DUE TO BRAKING TORQUE WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AND THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THE BRAKE DRUM, CONNECTED TO THE WHEEL HUB, WOULD COMPLETELY SEPARATE FROM THE DISC.
Consequence Summary:
IF THIS HAPPENED, THE WHEEL WOULD CONTINUE TO TURN, BUT THE DISC WOULD STOP, AND THERE WOULD BE NO BRAKING CAPACITY AT THAT WHEEL, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Corrective Summary:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE BOTH REAR BRAKE ROTORS. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING LATE MARCH OR EARLY APRIL 2002. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-831-1117.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 02V088000.
Important Note Regarding Auto Recalls
Frequently SafetyAlerts will list auto recalls before
your dealer will know about them. This is due to the
fact that dealerships are usually notified of recalls
once a month via CD ROM. If you have a vehicle
affected by one of these posted recalls be sure and
write down the NHTSA and, if included, the
manufacturer recall number which we list whenever
available. If your dealer doesn't know about the
recall when you check, ask them how they are
notified of recalls and when the next update is due.
