Can some of you experts tell me what the differences are in the 318, 325, 330, i, xi, and ci in the 3 series between the years 2000 and 2004? I am looking for a certified used 3 series between those years and I want to know what I am truly paying for. There is a lot out there and I am getting confused on all the designations. Thank you.

Thank you Cambridge. As I was looking at some models I was starting to figure that out as far as sedan and coupe. How about 318 verses 323, 325, and 330. What is the difference in those?

Do some research

Start with www.edmunds.com and research the used BMW vehicles. Read the overview for each year; it'll tell you what was introduced that year. Then read the wiki. For the E46 series (i.e., 2000 - 2005 3 series) it'll be http://www.bimmerfest.com/wiki/index.php/BMW_E46

They roughly indicate engine size. Higher numbers = larger engines. Using the E46 as an example, 325 = 2.5L while 330=3.0L. Its not always that simple, though, as the 323 had a 2.5L and the current 325 has a 3.0L.

i=sedan
xi=sedan w/ 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive (not quite sure which)
ci=coupe
...and to further confuse the issue, the new 335 coupe will go by 335i and not 335Ci.

318s are four cylinder models which are not imported into the USA -- for the years 2000 to 2004, you would be looking at 323/325 models (2.5 liter six) or 328/330 models (2.8/3.0 liter six.) The 323 and 328 models for model year 2000 were replaced by the 325/330 models for model year 2001 and later.

The differences are many and vary by year, but suffice it to say that the higher-end models (328 in 2000, 330 after) have more standard equipment, bigger brakes, etc.
