I just purchased a 2007 328i and I am a DIY'er (to a certain extent). No major work. I like to work on my own vehicles when I can. Is this BimmerGeeks Pro K+DCAN cable something that is a necessity? Will an ODBII do the job? I actually don't know what the BimmerGeeks Pro K+DCAN cable is as I just read a post that mentioned it. Thanks, all and I look forward to many more posts and conversations as I am a new fan of BMW.

More important to get working platforms with ISTA and INPA. INPA good for internal details, ISTA more up to date, in English and good for top-down diagnosing.

The BimmerGeeks Pro K+DCAN (and similar) work differently on different model years, some of which changed around 3/2007 build date on some models. Note "some"; that's why the cable can do both.

Not clear on the pinouts of your OBD2 cable, but the Bimmergeeks will work on BMW software on various models before and after the 3/07 change date.

Get a cable that works, and software that works, and you will pay for it on your first diagnosis and fix. Don't fight the cheap stuff, like the cable. That's the easy part.

On my '07's, the Geeks cable works with Carly as well, with a micro USB adapter.

Thanks, banglenot. Where do I purchase this "cable" from? So, all I need is the cable and a smartphone?

You can get any K/D can cable but the Bimmergeeks.net cable is the
most stable and fastest. Lets see do I want to risk my car with
a no name cable for a savings of 20 bucks. It is used with a PC
after downloading and setting up the software on there site.
The coding boards use to recommend the 100 dollar one stop electronics
cable but now recommend the Bimmergeeks Cable.
If you are not a computer person you may want to buy the Bimmergeeks
Pro Tool that will work from your phone and provide diagnostics
and canned programming similar to Carly.
You have to buy the software in packages for the Pro Tool still it is
not that expensive.

Bimmergeeks.net is where you get this stuff.

If you want the complete software for your PC you download from the links
found a Bimmergeeks.net and setup the Inpa suite and Ista D

Use both of them -- each has features the other doesn't.
