I went to my dealer last week and was looking at a convertible. Among the options for this particular one was the auto transmission. But it was listed like this:

Automatic Transmission (CVT) $1295

Does this mean that the 3 series now has a CVT transmission? I saw the post over at bimmer.org, but I didn't quite get the answer. If this "CVT" does not mean continuously variable transmission, then what does it mean? I know for a fact that I definitely saw the letters "CVT" in parenthesis after the auto trans. and before the price.

Thanks!

I didn't ask the dealer because I was in a hurry at the time. Plus I figured I would ask on a message board where I could get more of a consensus. Jon seems to know more than pretty much all other sales people I have come in contact with.

This was definitely not a typo. Some else from bimmer.org reported seeing the same thing.

My question is if it doesn't stand for continuously variable transmission, then what does it stand for?

You know - he's right!

I just looked at the Monroney label of a 325i that just came in, and it read: automatic transmission (CVT)... It most definitely is not a "continuously variable transmission"... I'm not sure what it's supposed to mean. There have been several cases of misprints in the past. Most recently (last summer), we received 2001 3-Series cars that (mistakenly) stated: "bi-xenon" headlamps. Bi-xenons started with the '02's...

As usual, thanks for the clarification Jon! I didn't think the "CVT" was available either, or there would have been much more hoopla associated with its release. Does BMW have any plans to release one for this model lifetime? or the next generation.

Also, any plans on a hardtop convertible? I have a picture of one at an auto convention from a year or so ago.

What Audi's new slogan?

"Never Follow"...

:p

I don't think BMW is like to follow Audi either. SMG is BMW's newest direction, but hey, you just never know...

A hardtop convertible, like the SLK? I doubt it, but again, you never know.

The optional removable hardtop is pretty cool though!

This one was really cool... (white/tanin)

Well, Jon...I know SLKs, I owned an SLK and I've used the SLK hardtop...the BMW removable hardtop is no SLK. I agree however, that it is cool.

BMW apparently has an SLK type hardtop in the works...

That was an aftermarket beast.
Too bad. I refuse to buy any sort of soft top convertible. I am damned uncomfortable in ragtops.

The only problem with an SL(K) style retractable hardtop is that it takes up an a$$ load of trunk space when in the down position. I'd still seriously consider getting a CiC (or even a Z3(4) or whatever they're going to call it) if it was available.

Something is wrong in systems.

What is the VIN on the car?
