Looks like round 2 of 'The Hire' is coming soon...

Just saw this... http://www.usatoday.com/money/advertising/2002-06-07-bmw-movie-ads.htm

BMW cars to star in online movie sequel

By Michael McCarthy, USA TODAY

Madonna and Clive Owen were featured in a film short for BMW called "The Hire" directed by Guy Ritchie.

Buckle your seat belts. BMW of North America is rolling out a sequel to its online movie series, The Hire.

The automaker has begun producing a second group of short films that will launch on the Web this fall. British actor Clive Owen, star of the feature film Croupier, again will take the wheel as the mysterious driver-for-hire who took co-stars such as Madonna on the ride of their lives (in BMWs, of course) in the first series.

"The films have attracted quite a following," says Jim McDowell, vice president of marketing for BMW. "We want to keep the enthusiasm going."

The second lap in the critically well-received series will be three films vs. four last year. McDowell says viewers will "learn more about" the character played by Owen. However, BMW wants new actors and directors around Owen to keep the films fresh. "Many directors are really intrigued by making films for the Internet," says McDowell.

BMW is keeping the same creative oversight team in place. Ad agency Fallon Worldwide, Minneapolis, which came up with the idea, is writing the scripts. David Fincher, director of Hollywood films such as Seven and Fight Club, again will serve as executive producer through his Anonymous Content production firm in Los Angeles.

Steve Golin, chief executive of Anonymous, says BMW is "committed" to making quality movies that entertain consumers. "The cars are a character in the film. They get banged up; they get dirty."

British actor Clive Owen will star in a sequel to BMW's hit Web ads this fall.

BMW attracted A-list Hollywood talent to direct and star in the flicks last year, including Madonna and Forest Whitaker and directors Ang Lee of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and John Frankenheimer of The Manchurian Candidate. The films run five to seven minutes at bmwfilms.com. They are not completely gratis: Web surfers have to give up personal information to view them.

The combination of famous faces, sexy cars and high-speed action made The Hire a Web hit. Visitors to the site have streamed the films roughly 13 million times since last spring. From 10,000 to 15,000 consumers still visit every day, says McDowell. Time magazine called the films "the ultimate in new media, high-end branding."

The second series is being readied as BMW's U.S. sales are on a roll. Through May, 2002 sales are up 17.4% over last year at this time, says Mike Greywitt of automotive consultancy J.D. Power and Associates. By contrast, General Motor's sales in the period are down 2.8%; Volkswagen is down 0.2%; and Toyota is up 2.8%, according to Power.

Yeah I would like to see a new "Z" film and an E-65 film. I wonder if they will do anything with the Mini?

BMW Films Continuing

bmwfilms.com Announces Ground-Breaking Internet Film Series Will Continue
Slated to Premiere Fall, 2002

WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- bmwfilms.com today announced they will continue their ground-breaking Internet films series, The Hire, with three new releases in 2002.

British acting sensation Clive Owen ("The Bourne Identity," "Gosford Park," "Croupier") will reprise his smoldering role as The Driver, the mysterious reoccurring character around whom all of the films revolve. As was the first Hire series, this new triad of films will be executive produced by David Fincher and produced by Anonymous Content and Fallon Worldwide. Directors and other talent for the films were not released. The films are underwritten by BMW.

The new films will premiere on the Internet at bmwfilms.com in the Fall. The Hire Series made international waves last year, when it featured films directed by John Frankenheimer ("Ronin," "Grand Prix," "The Manchurian Candidate"), Ang Lee (Oscar and Golden Globe winner "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Sense and Sensibility," "Eat Drink Man Woman"), Wong Kar-Wai ("In the Mood for Love," "Happy Together," "Chung King Express"), Guy Ritchie ("Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," "Snatch") and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu ("Amores Perros"). The films were brilliantly cast with strong supporting characters played by: Mickey Rourke ("The Pledge"), Tomas Milian ("Traffic"), Adriana Lima (Guess model) and Madonna (actress/recording artist).

More than 13 million film views were logged in at the digital-quality streaming video website.

"The Hire was an unprecedented example of media convergence that both pushed and crossed boundaries. We had no idea how successful it would be, since we were going into unchartered territory when we started the project. In the end, the project far exceeded any of our expectations, which is why we're so thrilled to be working on three more films for The Hire," said Jim McDowell, Vice President of Marketing for BMW of North America, LLC.
