Nose Mask/Bra what do you think?

1993 Views 13 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  larhode
I am thinking of getting the BMW bra but wanted to get opinions before I commited to the purchase.

Quality?
Fit?
Damage/potential damage?
Paint rub?

Anyone have experience with other brands?

Thanks

Don't do it!!!

Why destroy the beautiful nose of your precious baby when you could just get the 3m mask instead? I dare say it might even be cheaper...

can you take it on and off or is the 3M permanant?

I was thinking about using a mask only on road trips:dunno:

As far as I know it's rather permanent, although I'm sure you could remove it if it was really necessary (how you'd go about that without a razor blade I'm not sure).

I *suppose* that's acceptable. ;) Seriously though, get the 3m and don't ever worry about it, since you'll never really notice it anyhow.

Untrue.

The "Owner/Operator" and Mother Nature will ruin the finish, not the Bra. I can't tell you how many cars I see driving in the rain with them on. That is a big no-no, Colgans bra even tells you to remove it during foul weather, reason is, sand, dirt, that the rain holds, will work its way under the bra and settle, any slight movement, or failure to wash underneath the bra will be abrasive to the finish.

Now, I researched this for about 2 months. After talking to many about this subject, I concluded two things:

A)If you go with a bra, you HAVE to remove it when it begins to rain or snow, and ONLY put it back on a FRESHLY CLEANED AND DRIED finish. The backside of Colgan bra's is a very soft material that will NOT damage your finish, but the dirt trapped within it will, thus the above summary.

B)Clear bra's ARE more expensive, and I've yet to see one over 2 years old, the one guy I did speak to that had a clear bra (3M one) said that after about 18 months, little bits of dirt began forming on the edges that just would not wash out, he ended up stripping off the clear bra.

Now, the reason I got one was because I was getting tired of seeing the little tiny sand-blast nicks in the hood line of the finish..granted we only get about 125 days of sunshine in the Pacific Northwest, I figured its going to reduce those nicks by 33% over a years time. I strictly follow the aforementioned rules above, and it gives me peace of mind. Take care of it, make sure the bra is clean, and the finish is clean, don't use it in the rain, follow those rules, and they're worth their weight in rock-chip gold!
One other advantage to Colgan bras are the stiffener shown in the pics below, they deflect any rock chips up over the car (seen it happen just the other day!) and it takes me about 30 seconds to put the bra on or take it off. (Its a "Sports Bra", not a full frontal bra)

You can get it WITH the roundel cut-out, or without it (Without roundel cut out below)

Edit: I might add, I only use it when commuting, I really dislike the looks of the bra's on cars.

Well I was speaking aesthetically, but it doesn't look so bad on a black car at least.

Personally I don't like 'em, and said inconveniences (i.e. keep it clean, don't drive in the rain, etc.) would be enough to deter me from having one anyhow.

Mark me as "Anti-bra", but after seeing my beautiful finish pock marked by the sand the Semi's kick up beside the road, I had to take action! 30 seconds of my time putting it on, taking it off is minimal to me, compared to the time its going to take me to repair, then buff out the hoodline this spring. Hell, it takes me longer to get it out of the trunk then it takes to put it on! :)

Kudos sir, for having the determination to continue using it after 5-6 times! ;)

Depends on color or car too...

Here's the Colgan with the Roundel cutout.

I don't like bras on much of anything myself :lmao:
The clear 3m material is easily removed. But once you take it off its ruined and cant be put back on. You'd have to buy a new one. My friend has it on his 5 series and you can hardly see it. It does protect the finish and you can get pieces that protect the front bumper, mirrors, and other parts of the car. This place has them and they are cheaper then xpel but made of the same 3m material.

If you live near by they will install them for you too for a small fee. You can install them yourself but its somewhat difficult.

So far, I've only met online one person who's had them, as reported above. How long has he had them on? If more than a year and a half, please get a full report from him, I'd be interested to see how its holding up (the hood portion anyway)

My friend installed his clear protector in November 2000. So far it looks great. He does use zaino however. I've heard if you use regular wax you can get a white buildup around the edges of the material that looks bad. With Zaino this doesn't happen.

My friends car is Silver. I've been told that on white cars it does not look good, you can see it. The darker the car the better it looks. Have no way to confirm this as I've only seen it on a silver car.
