So I'm currently in the process of downloading all the files from rapidshare -- is it true that all of the .rar files are needed?

They are big and it's taking a looooooooooong time.

TIA!

Svache,

Do you see the speed limit all the time?

I see spped limit once in a while but it dissapears with in seconds and the rest of the time it is just dashes!
and it doesn't read all the speed signs and it doesnt read teh same speed all the time ... does any of this sound familiar.

And don't you see four dashes two for speed and two for no pass indicator ?

.

Once it reads a speed, it usually stays on until we reach an updated/different speed limit sign. There are times, however, that I only have dashes in the white square and this usually happens when I turn into a different street without traffic sign (or it seems this way at least).

Out of all speed signs, I think it reads about 95-98 percent of them. The only times it doesn't read them is when the view is obstructed (like a tree in front of it or with bad weather), other than this I think it's almost always working. It even recognizes the small speed limit signs that are posted on those yellow/orange diamond shaped roadwork signs.

I don't see the no-pass indicator at all, only the speed limit indicator. As far as I am aware, it only gets the speed limit from the road signs. It has been very consistent in only updating the speed limit until about 5-10 feet after passing the sign, when there was no sign available it would simply show dashes :)

I tried to change the country for germany
but one should chage the TYPE for the ECE model, if not will get errors that I have two countries onfigured.
so I edited mine for fu91 instead of fu93
when i calculate the target svt and I try to code it (even no CAF files can be found in SWE), I get this

com.bmw.psdz.api.internal.ExceptionHandler: ERROR:1. exception = SVK-Ist does not match expected SGBMIDs at ECUId:HU_CIC_0x63. I also tried to add only 8TD and 8TH, but again no visible changes in target SVT

maybe I'm doing something wrong. I'll try again later.

lol no worries, I don't mind :)

As for the answer to your question, it looks as if it only holds on to the previous limit if I stay on the same road. When I turn into a different road, often the speed limit is gone until a new sign is passed. I basically think that this is the thing they read from the Nav, other than this it's actual sign reading, I think.

svache
can you send us the caf files,, until we manage to figure out how to add 8TH.

also, in FA, what is your Typeschlussel ?

in Vechicle profile
what is your Countryversion TYPE?
lol I wish I could give you the answers to these questions but sad thing is that those on eBay do not ship to Hawaii when it comes to the ODB2 connectors. So I have now asked Sean to help me out and he is willing to do so but he is waiting for a new order of connectors to come in, which takes about two weeks. After he send me a cable, I can give you guys all the data you want :)

That might work too.. my mailing address zip is at 96701. I can also receive on 96797 but I don't prefer getting mail here as they're sometimes emptying our mailbox before we do lol. And after this coming Friday also on 96789.

hmm.. ebay
i ordered mine and it's been three weeks and I did not get it
i could not wait so i improvized from what I could find in the house. I had a serial DB9 to ethernet adapter, i bought some resistors, and i just plugged in the pins from the db9 into obd, the resistors also, some electric tape to keep them away from my legs and i am good to code LOL 50cents connector in a $$$ car

This thread has gone way beyond what I can keep up with in more ways than one. Have the Houston group made any plans to get together? Can I suggest we pick a Sunday morning to meet sometime in the next few weeks? I'm happy to go to any part of town, and I'm happy to buy anyone who programs just a few of the important things lunch. Hell, I might even put you on my list (anyone who figures out what that means gets free coffee and donuts too!).

I can't be sure I'm going to keep up with every page of this thread as it's moving so fast. But if anyone (well, if the "programmer") wants to pick a day, please send me a PM and I'll reply back with my e-mail address and phone number.

@jjsC6; You and about 5 other are on my list. I will set something up for Houston. Next weekend may not be good since it is Memorial Day holiday, but I am thinking the following weekend. I will PM everyone so you don't have to worry about checking here.

@cn555ic: lol me too ;)

@DreamCar: Just to confirm, I just took a little drive in my car and looked how it exactly performed and it is indeed what I already thought that it was. As soon as I enter a new street and the street sign is not close to the entry point, the speed limit indicator will show three dashes. As soon as it sees the street sign with speed limit posted, it will show that speed limit until it either finds an updated one, or if I enter a new street and the traffic sign is again not close to the entry point. I honestly think that this is basically the only thing the system needs the navigation for, to see if you entered a new street or not. It makes sense too, if you think about it, if it would take the information from the navigation, it might actually show outdated speed limits after a while as the street signs may chance over time while not being updated in the system, or what to think about temporary speed limit chances (as happens with road work, for example).

This is from BMW advertisment:

The system uses a camera mounted near the interior mirror to read the roadsigns. It then compares them with the data already stored in the car's navigation system and relays the information to the driver.

This dual mode of operation allows Speed Limit to be accurate even if, on some roads, the speed limit has changed for one reason or another. If so, all the driver has to do is comply with the information relayed by the camera.

Or this one:

How does it work? A camera is mounted near the interior mirror looking outwards towards all the speed signs, capable of reading painted metal signs as well as dynamic digital displays.

Once the speed sign if read, the car then compares the results to the data saved in the navigation system. If the speed limits don***8217;t match, due to temporary conditions such as roadworks, the system will priority to the data recorded by the camera.

BMW is adamant to make it clear that whilst the technology will inform the driver of the correct speed limit, it is simply just that, an information system. The system will not force the driver to maintain the speed limit.

@Mobileum: I have a bit of a hard time believing the system actually reads data from the navigation system other than to see on what road you are. That is unless the navigation has no speed limit information of Hawaii in it's system, of course. Thing is, if the system indeed relies so heavily on the navigation for speed limits, then why does it not display any speed limit until I actually pass a traffic sign with speed limit posted? It is possible that it should work that way but all I'm saying is that it doesn't seem to work like that for me.

I came from a 400 meters long privat road. Entering the main street, the speed limit info showed up immediatly, and there was no speed sign on that road. On the private road, only dashes came up. Unless there is a different system in the US, I´m very confident that the speed limit works together with the navi database. All official informations on the net says the same, and it also makes sense.
