Their previous E36 racers looked racey. Sorry to say, even with the same paint scheme as the old cars, this looks more ricey than racey. Maybe the stickers will help...

Good point. As cool as this is, had it not been for the interior shot, I would have mistook this for something out of one of the street racing posts... :( Still looks like fun though! :thumb:

ATTN ALL COUPE ELITISTS (you know who you are)-

NOTICE THAT THESE ARE SEDANS NOT COUPES.

Enough said.
Hmmm... In the last pic, there's a coupe (E36) right in front of the sedan... :p :lmao:

Now, please, refresh my mind... What did they race in the ALMS??? :p

they're all the same car.

And the one in back looks like a coupe to me

Look at where the B pillar is. It's an E36 sedan with the rear door in some way welded shut or otherwise permanently closed.

Funny, that's the pic I had in mind... Now that you posted it, I'm even more convinced that that car is an E36 coupe.

It's really hard to say. You have no idea what all got changed in the transformation to racecar.

Here's a comparative pic-

One question though. Someone posted a while back saying that TurnerMotorsports actually transplanted the M50 2.5L not use the M54 2.5L. From their website, it seems that it is the latter, not the former.

Also, the reason why this car looks so ricey is *probably* due to the 17" wheels??

Here's another pic:

Did they base it on the 2.5 liter M54? What mods were done to the engine? Why 2.5 liters-- is there some displacement limit for the race? As a 325i owner i'd like to believe its the inherent greatness of the 2.5 liter version over the 3.0 but I somehow doubt that.

TD- i know you're an e36 sedan owner- but that car behind the e46 is an e36 coupe. Take a look at the size of the door relative to the rear side window. But I do agree w/ you that the sedan makes a better platform because its lighter and more rigid.

THe coupe body style was used in ALMS because it had to be somewhat based on a production car and engine-- so they had to use the M3 coupe as a basis since there is no sedan version. Actually, i doubt that it really matters i terms of performance when you modify the car that much. The main problem w/ the coupe is the mandatory folding rear seats-- i'm sure the coupe body shell used in ALMS had some solid steel or braces between the rear shock towers. If it wasn't for regulations, BMW might've chosen the coupe style for marketing reasons-- it looks "sexier" which is one of the reasons they race in the first place-- to attract youung males to the brand. Anyway, as a sedan owner and lover, I'd to believe that the sedan is superior in every aspect (which it is of course ;) .

robg: why 2.5L engine?

i wonder why, too.

but i'm guessing since the series tries to be quite fair, that if you're allowed the 2.8litre or 3.0litre engine? that you're penalized with weight to make it more even.

because also in this class (and dominant) have been the integra type R cars (hugh plumb, maybe?). so, to keep it fair, i'll bet they look at the 1.8litre type R engine and the 3.0 litre and slap a fat 100-200kg penalty right there.

and since the 2.5 litre S54 is so darn close to the "old" 2.8litre engine'd e36 racing cars, i'll bet they'd rather start building up that engine instead of tweaking the bigger 3.0 and dealing with weight.

TD: I am afraid that car driven by Don Salama in the background is a E36 Coupe. I confirmed that with TMS a while ago.

robg: I have every reason to believe that the M54 2.5L has a lot of potential to be tuned around with. Dyno numbers have already shown that the listed numbers for 325 (184hp, 175lb-fts) are underrated. My arguement is that the BMW marketing has again, made that difference intentionally so that the 330 owners feel more secured with the 41hp difference for the amount of money they paid. I am not kidding on this one. The dyno numbers for 33

atyclb: Believe it or not, for the last decade of STW, STCC, BTCC, Nurburing 24-hour, de Spa, ADAC TW touring cups, almost every BMW used was an E36 sedan. Coupes were used in very few DTM races. Here's my partial collection of E36 sedans raced...

blackdawg: Mmm...isn't S54 the E46 M engine?? I am trying to track down the restrictions for Speedvision Touring Championship...must be somewhere on the net.
