I drive a 2010 BMW 328xi coupe.

When I start my vehicle, a number flashes indicating the number of miles I've left before I need another oil change.

My question is: After an oil change, what is this number supposed to be reset to? I was under the impression the number was 15,000.

It varys based on gas usage.

Some report that the counter will go up close to 20k before it requests
and oil change.

But if you are keeping the car long term or don't like to abuse things
most here change there oil at least every 7500 or once an year .
And remember you are entitled to one free oil change a year regardless
of miles driven.
Its in the warranty manual that the oil should be changed once a year.

Also its a very good habit to check the oil level with the stalk control and keep
track of usage and top off.

Hmm... I just found it interesting that the counter reads 17,000 (counts down) and 17,000 miles puts me just above my 50,000 mile warranty. I thought they had always reset it to 15,000 so I'm a bit confused.

If you haven't had a change in a year
you are entitled to a free one.
They are very vague about this its in the warranty manual and has
been the topic of some large threads.

That countdown jumps around depending on use.

Just change the oil every. 5-7k and have fun DIY..
