Hi all,
My first post here. I noticed for the past 2 weeks that my oil light comes on after I stop and turn off my car when I get home (yellow light) but it doesn't happen all the time. I can say maybe more when I drive faster (especially for uphills) but when I check the levels are fine and I can't even put anything in.

The level stick indicator is not always the same, sometimes it's says it's low but when I want to fill it, it's already full. Any ideas? :dunno:

325i BMW 2004 e46 is the model with about 135000 km on it.

Yellow oil light?. Your level sensor is broken. It's at the bottom of your oil pan. Mines been broken for years. I'll never replace it since I can check my oil manually with the dip stick.

Basically the light will go on when you start the car. Then it'll go off in a few moments after driving off.

You're right. It comes on with other lights when I turn on the car and goes off normally but it was worrying me when it comes on after I stop and turn the car off. It stays on for about 30 seconds then goes off again.

So should I even bother fixing it?

Like I said. I haven't fixed mine for years and I do mean YEARS like over 3 at least :rofl:

It's up to you. If you want the light to work or not. The part is $80s and I'd prefer to spend that $80 on an oil change considering oil and a filter for our cars is only $60s. That means $20 left over for beer!.

If your oil level is fine on the dip stick? your good.

If you decide to fix it, it's an easy DIY.

Take the belly pan off (Dzus fasteners, iirc). Two, maybe three bolts, unplug the electrical connector, and replace it.

Oh yeah, just make sure you drain the engine oil PRIOR to doing this.

It`s no big deal....the oil sensors are known to be extremely sensitive....try adding an extra 1/2 cup of oil, that should do it. If not, raise the level by 1 cup total.

Thanks for the tips everyone. The dip stick is also what threw me off since it showed different levels at different times.

I guess I may leave it especially since it's not happening all the time. Like I said, I can tell it happens more when I drive faster and press more on the gas when going uphill so this was my only worry.
If I do fix it, it will be on my next oil change probably.

The dipstick will read erratically if the car hasn't sat for a while after being shut down. When you first shut down a lot of oil is in the galleys, head, etc and it takes time to drainback to the pan fully. Never check it within 30 min of shutdown so you get an accurate reading.

In the future, at oil change time, be sure to add exactly seven quarts of fresh oil, wait a half hour for everything to settle in, and then check the level on the stick, making a careful note (hand-drawn diagram, photo, or scribe a new "FULL" line on the stick) so you have a correct reference point with fresh oil in the engine.
