The temp is read off the sensor on the bottom of the oil pan. These sensors don't fail often, but a bad rebuilt alternator will make the sensor look bad. Has an alternator been installed since this started?

Yes. The alternator was replaced and the oil temp gauge in my tachometer cluster stopped working. The mechanic ordered part from Germany. Will that work? Thank you.

If the alternator is not a new Valeo, I would start looking at the alternator. Rebuilt alternators will cause this problem. I would not install the sensor until you confirm the alternator is not rebuilt, or new. Usually rebuilt alternators will not install the proper voltage regulator, & this happens.
