Looks like perhaps they don't use a TPS (throttle position sensor). Those may have actually gone away with electronic throttle controls, or at least perhaps they are integrated into the same unit now. Before, the throttle cable would open the flap, and the TPS would relay that back to the ECU to determine shift points, etc.

Thanks smyles for the response. Just to confirm, it would be the entire part #4 assembly correct?
 
I received the part from ECS tuning and did the install of the throttle valve this past weekend. Everything mentioned in this thread is correct. It removed my P2621 code and the vehicle is smooth now when it's shutoff.

What a pain of an install though. No heavy lifting, but the bottom 2 bolts are very difficult to get to. After removing the air duct, I had to maneuver a small allen key (nothing else would fit) and turn it 1/8 turn at a time. Putting the bolts back in was even tougher. Get your magnet ready to fish around for the bolt every time you drop it...

Took me 3-4 hours fumbling with the bolts for what should only be a 20 minute job if everything was accessible.

You are right: when I cleaned the intake in mine I removed the EGR valve and the TB and they are a PITA. Two things helped:
1) Remove the fan: it's actually very simple and gives quite a bit of extra room
2) Ball end Allen wrenches

^^ You buy BMW parts from ECS and you do not have the BMW dealer warranty.

any of the online BMW dealers you will have the BMW warranty.

Mine's a 2011 X5 diesel. Here's the part from ECS: http://www.ecstuning.com/ES26528/

Sometimes the categories on ECS don't work well. Use realoem.com to find the part number and then search ECS by part number.

I also ordered the o-ring (13547792098). You may want to order some extras of the bolts in case you drop them and can't find them in the engine bay.

You'll need a helper.
Start the engine.
Open the hood.
Remove the above mentioned engine cover.
Look at the throttle, specifically the part with the spring. While at it, ask the helper to shut the engine off. Has the spring part moved ~90°? If no, it's defective.
Well, the spring part did not move at all, so I think you are right in saying that is the part I need to replace. You guys are awesome, thank you. I'll be ordering

Well, I just ordered the part.
Just curious, has anyone looked into why this part fails? If it really is the spring not moving 90 degrees, maybe it's an easy fix to the existing part and a new part is not necessary?

I forgot to post back, I installed the part and all is good. Code is gone and hasn't come back. Thanks for your help in figuring this one out. I still don't really get why this part would go bad, seems like not much too it. Not cheap either
 
Does you car shudder for a moment when you shut of the engine, as if an engine mount is bad? The throttle is supposed to close when you shut off the engine (and does nothing else, btw). Check its operation. I can't remember what the code I was getting, but in my case the gunk got into the servo/electronics and I guess shorted it for good. Looked like this:
smyles is removing the cover destructive or can it put back together?

Now that I don't get anymore oil in the intake I wouldn't mind taking mine apart and possibly clean it with some electric contact cleaner.
