Hello and thanks,

I have a 2014 x5 w/ the phone adapter cradle thing in the center box..

My question is does this do anything special that a charging cable plugged into the USB port would not do?

I almost think I would rather gain that space back by removing it as I dont see a reason for it ..

If I am missing something please let me know and thank you in advance.

The baseplate connects to the cell antenna in the car by induction via the proper snap-in. That is the only difference from using the USB cable.
