I AM HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS!!! HELP! I just pulled the trigger on a new 2018 440i Xdrive coupe 2 door. LOVE the car. BUT, it doesn't come with M sport and does come with the stock 19" Star spoke 407 Bi-Grey wheels. Premium, Essentials packages plus Harmon Kardon.

This is a deeply discounted car and was able to let me get into the larger engine with not a ton more money than the 430i with M Sport and 18"s I was deciding between. Haven't taken delivery.

Will the 440i with stock suspension and the 19s have a significantly worse handling and ride than a 430i with M Sport (standard suspension) and 18's? What about the 19s in the snow with all weather tires?

I would assume the engineers at BMW made the best car possible without worrying wether folks orders the M Sport package. And that since I'm not tracking the car, the upgraded, amazing in line 6 is still going to provide years of permagrins... Just beating myself up mentally and I need your help!

Thanks!!!!!!

Matt

If you like the car it is all that counts. If you bought the car you may want to replace the steering wheel with the M-Sport version. If you leased it just enjoy it for the next 3 years.
Just a side note as long as the car was not driven off a dealer's lot you can still cancel the deal.

"significantly worse" is up to interpretation. "M sport" is an appearance package, BUT the standard suspension on a RWD BMW and an Xdrive BMW is different in the 3/4 series. The X drive rides higher, and MANY BELIEVE handles worse, with more float.

So its not an M sport vs non M sport situation per se, but the M sport comes with a sport suspension IF GETTING RWD. Since you got X drive, if you were going to get a 430 M sport WITH XDRIVE you would have the same suspension you have now.

So... to summarize, if you were getting Xdrive, m sport vs non m sport would not matter at all for suspension / handling... they are going to handle the same. If you were considering a RWD M sport vs the X drive Non M sport, that would be different.

You probably know this, but you should have investigated all this before buying the car. Once you have signed, thats it. You cant "take it back" in most states unless a dealer lets you, and most wont. You could certainly sell it, but would likely lose 3-5k on that transaction since the car is now "used".

This is exactly what I was talking about. The M sport steering wheel is the only important difference in this case but adding it would probably cost the same as upgrading wheels to 19 inch ones which already are on the car. M Sport body work does not worth much to me.

As to "as you signed it is a done deal" it is not true. Backing off at this point may not be the most decent thing to do but legally you can.
What can they do drive the car to your house and drop it there? Keep your deposit? None of these two things is going to happen.
As long as the car is still in their possession they will just offer you to get one you will be happy with. Maybe the deal will not be as good as this one but here you cannot blame them.

Did I miss where the OP said they did not have possession of the car? Its true (to my knowledge at least) that if you have not left the lot with the car, you have not actually "taken posession" of it.. but if the wheels of the car have crossed the threshold off the dealers lot, the OP has taken possession of it, so what I said is true (at least in my state).

OP I would not worry about it, and just enjoy the car. I used a bunch of words to basically say that if you were getting X drive on both it didnt matter, and the engine would be more enjoyable than the M sport package.

Haven't taken delivery.
Consult with your state Attorney General's office, but if you haven't taken physical delivery then you don't own it. If you did official paperwork, they might consider it a "done deal." But with the car there, I doubt any paperwork has been sent to the DMV/DOL or the financing company, if there is one.

Will the 440i with stock suspension and the 19s have a significantly worse handling and ride than a 430i with M Sport (standard suspension) and 18's?
You answered your own question, in my book. You aren't tracking the car. It's your daily driver. I'd take the Sport Line 440 over the M Sport 430 any day.

For daily driving it's hard to discern a significant difference.

What about the 19s in the snow with all weather tires?
With all seasons, and if it's an xDrive, you should be fine. If an RWD, get some winter tires. Nokian Haakepeliittas or Bridgstone Blizzacks.

I would assume the engineers at BMW made the best car possible without worrying whether folks orders the M Sport package. And that since I'm not tracking the car, the upgraded, amazing in line 6 is still going to provide years of permagrins... Just beating myself up mentally and I need your help!
Have fun with the HP and Torque ...

That's a good problem to have :) You're going to love it regardless, handling will be the same. But what is Harmon Kardon, I see a lot of folks getting that? Is that a Chinese knock off sound system? The real deal is called Harman Kardon, so Harmon Kardon make me think of Sonny , Sumsang waporware...

Hey Matt - suggestion: stop reading this forum and enjoy your new car. Keep reading and you will be wondering why you didn't get a M5...

The 440 has a proven engine and a lower center of gravity than most of the BMW line-up and will probably handle better 99% of the cars & SUV's on the road. First real snow day in CO and I suspect you'll be very thankful you went with xDrive and the B58 engine. And the money you saved can go to a spare set of winter tires to switch off with performance summer tires!

If you're still lusting after something more, there's always more aftermarket gizmos to spend your hard earned cash on but at least you'll be starting with the foundation of the more powerful engine.

I faced a similar conundrum when I got my x3 35i. Could’ve gotten an msport 330 wagon instead. The bmw turbo 6 is such a wonderful engine- I doubt you’ll be caring much about msport after you start driving your 440.

MATT on Xdrive cars they do not get M Sport Suspension (704) its an appearance package.

If you want a better suspension, get the Adaptive suspension.

I wouldn't worry about it, drive it and enjoy it.

^ exactly. One of the few ppl here addressing the op. Msport or not, XDrive has same suspension on all trims. Adaptive is better but not good enough. Just get some coilovers like bilstein b14 and it'll feel more like a real Bmw.

Seems to me that if you were comparing it to the 430i M-Sport, then you can drive them both back-to-back and make up your own mind.

It's a lot of money. Be sure that it's really what you want. Test drive everything.

I wouldn't worry too much and enjoy the new car.
In my view you have swapped for a better and more powerful engine, which will give you the pleasure you need. I am guessing what you are mainly missing since you now don't have M Sport package is the M aerodynamics package (looks mostly), M sport steering wheel (better feel) and sports seats (thigh support). Each of which is trumped by the inline 6 engine you are getting on a great deal. If you later decide to sport it up you can always explore after market parts..

I am waiting on my new 440i Gran Coupe. I went in to buy 430i Gran Coupe, but chose to sacrifice some luxury for the better engine and went with the 440i.
I get 19 inch summer RFT as standard and only option, though I would have preferred 18 in All Seasons, I've never been fond of swapping tires. But I am getting 18 inch replica rims and winter tires (non RFT). If you end up feeling unsafe with 19 inch all seasons in winter, you could get a 17 or 18 inch winter set.

The M Sport package is over-rated, in my opinion. It’s almost all appearance. I don’t have it in my car, nor do I miss it. The steering wheel I have is just fine, the wheels are awesome; I’m very happy with it. I have a lot of extra features, like Harman Kardon, cold weather package, HUD... I love them all, but having lots of M’s all over a car that isn’t an M car is nothing I worry about.

Agree with the comments about 3.0 B58 engine, can't go wrong. Have not driven an X so can't comment on the suspension, although I believe 95% of people will not notice or appreciate the attributes of a lower/tighter 704 suspension. Have a M Sport with adapative, which is very nice - much softer ride in bumpy city streets. Regarding M Sport vs non M Sport, as many have said it is more aesthetic than functional, but the steering wheel and sports seats are definitely a plus. You'll be fine with your choice ... enjoy!!

Thanks!

OP here. You guys are the best. Seriously great info. Didn't realize the MSPORT suspension was only available on the RWD so that significantly eased my mind. Took delivery. Extremely happy with the car and to be part of the club.

Cheers!
