I had this exact same problem on another car that turned out to be strut bearings (on the top of the struts). It felt like a steering "knuckle" popping.

Check your tie-rod assembly.

 

The problem I'm having is that the "popping" is transmitted thru every suspension part (it's hard to tell where it's coming from).

What's the best way to check the tie rods?

Control arm bushings

Check control arm bushings by raising right front off ground and trying to move tire/wheel assy back and forth to check for play. If you have play watch the bushing while testing.

 

Are you talking about the lower arm with the bushing that is at the back of the wheel well?

 

Yes, the bushing is the rear mount of the front lower control arm. It will be near the rear of the front wheelwell and mounts to the frame with 2 bolts. There is one on each side of the car, but the right one usually wears out first.

 

May I join in? My 2003 Z4 just started doing the exact "knuckle sound popping" also....and I just had the front control arm bushings done about 9 months ago and I had the dealer look at my rears a month ago and they are fine. Yes it sounds like its in the steering column itself, noise traveling up....from wherever.
