Problems starting car this morning

2809 Views 24 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  JawKnee
I left my car alone this whole weekend and this morning when i tried to start it, it kind of sputtered and then the engine stalled. I then cranked it again and it started perfectly fine the second time. No warning lights are lit on my dash. Has anybody else experienced this?

Pretty typical for a car that's left alone more than 48 hours or so. I bet it idled rather roughly for a few seconds as well. Happens to the best of us! ;)
Same here this weekend!

Just these past three mornings (Sat, Sun, Mon), my 325i (3 months old) stalled when I first started the car. The second attempt always does fine.

Is this a common issue with the e46s?

Sounds like a conspiracy to me! :D

Seriously, it's likely just because of the extreme weather change or something. Little water vapor or extra fuel left over, something, who knows.
Re: Re: Same here this weekend!

This is really spooky. I was going to post and see if anyone else was having a similar rough start problem. For about 3 wks now, my car will cold start a little rough, bounce the RPMs from 600-2k then settle in and idle smoothly. It did actually stall on one occasion, but again, was fine after settling down on restart. I haven't gotten any SES or EML lights, so I can't really call my dealer and express concern over "non-replicatable" problems.

Same thing here

In the morning after a cold night (35-45 Degrees). Most times it seems like it would have started just fine if I would have let it turn over for another second.
Welp, it happened again this morning. I really watched the tach and noticed that when I cranked it, the needle reached no more than 500 rpms and then died, up and down. Second start had no problems.

I believe it is time to call the dealer up for an appointment.
*argh* and the car is 3 months old. My wife is going to kill me.

Has there been a drastic change in weather in all of your areas? Does your state mandate a different formulation of gas between Winter and Summer?
I live in Austin so the temperature has dropped about 20 degrees to a cold 70. So...I don't think temperature should be a problem? maybe... :)
Same thing happened to me 2 weeks ago for 3 days in a row!

I've got an '02 325i and I experienced the same problem a few weeks ago, but haven't had a problem since. I don't know what it is, but it sounds like an epidemic........I smell recall.
You know what I find interesting about all of this? You all drive 325's. Hmmmm.... :eeps: :eeps:
Are you guys sure you aren't just stopping cranking too quickly? I know that i tend to shorten the period I spend cranking it when I get more and more accustomed to the car... Eventually, it'll fail to start when I shorten it too much, or it's just cold.
If there's a different fuel formulation for the summer, you might try disconnecting your battery for a few seconds and resetting the throttle maps.

I'm positive that I crank it long enough, especially after the 3rd time it happened!

Would putting in the wrong gas do this? My wife filled it up the day before all this started happening. That's the only thing I can think of.
If you take it in for service. Let us know what they say.
My service appointment is tomorrow (thursday). I'll post then with their take on the problem.
happens to me once every blue moon..not sure what it is, but after that second start, everything seems normal (hopefully):dunno:
The service guy I saw this morning basically says they might have to hold my car awhile in order to duplicate the problem. :( I hope some kind of error code was generated for them to fix the problem.

I'd hate to have to 2-3 days for them to crank start once each morning... :(

Keep us posted
I've had that problem in the past w/ my 325i too. NEver triggered any faults or lights. I think it happens if you move the car a short distance when the engine is cold, shut it off and then use it on another day. When it happened to me, I had moved the car a few feet, and when I started it the next day it ran rough for the first few minutes. Hasn't happened since then and I've left the car unused for periods of over 1 week- with no starting problems.
