Question for the experts: HK

1734 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  31st330i
A while back I went to a local stereo shop (Car Toys) and had them put a sub in with a amp I had. I told them to disconnect the HK subs since they rattled anyway. So, here I am wishing I had more trunk space. I decided to take out the sub and hook my HK subs back up. After fumbling around for an hour trying to hook my HK back up...I couldn't get it to work.

So here are some pic's. Can you answer the following:

#1, what are these blue female connctors for?

#2, what do these red male connectors go to?

#3 , what are these red female connectors used for?

Anything you can suggest in order to get my HK subs working again is appreciated. I don't want to take it back into those bastards...!

can't see the pics but I bet they cut your wiring somewhere to tap into it for the new subs. check the main amp connector or the sub amp connector.

check out my HK retrofit paeg for reference:

Um, yeah, none of those are factory connectors. From looking at 31st's stuff in the past and your pics, it looks like someone hacked off the stock connectors. If you can get the connector ends back, this is probably repairable.
I don't know what the red male connectors actually go to. you'd either have to talk to the shop that did it or trace them back to the amp.

since you can see the wire color codes of the wires with the female splices (red and blue), you can figure out what each of these wires is by looking at my page.

actually, the connectors don't look hacked off at all. they just look "tapepd in to" the two blue splices appear to be the speaker leads. the three other red ones will be for amp trigger and signal + and signal -

the blue connectors on the gray wires appear to be red hearings. these are the amp outputs to the stock HK subs. the shop may have tried to take the amplified signal into the amp and since it didn't work, they just left the two blue connectors in place. I'd remove the blue splices and cover up the broken wire jacket carefully with electrician's tape. you can get BMW electrical tape from the dealer (look at my HK web page for the part number).

of the three red connectors, one is the amp trigger lead (as I recall, this is the white wire in the factory harness. the other two are signal leads (again, look at my page to figure out which is + and whic is -).

the male connectors dangling through the hole probably go right back to the aftermarket amp and the subs themselves are just connected directly to that.

theoretically, unless the wire is broken, you should just be able to unplug their splices and plug the HK sub amp 10 pin connector back in and it should just work.

that's my armchari diagnosis. good luck.

Thanks for the tips...I'm kinda pissed that I even took it into them in the first place. I'll see if I can monkey with it...if I fail, I'll take into them...
before taking it in to them, check the fuses. check for power (+12VDC) at the 10 pin sub amp connector and check for ground as well. check the white amp trigger lead for +12VDC when the radio is on. if you get power, ground and trigger lead, trace the signal lead back to the main amp.

I don't remember but there may also be a fuse on the subwoofer amp. check that fuse (preferable with a test light) and check the fuse box.
