So, this past may I bought my 1995 BMW 540i off craigslist for $3200. It had 239000 km on it on the date of purchase and I was told numerous things that later revealed to be false. The previous owner told me and even my dad that he de-activated the air conditioning because it used too much gas. I asked him how he did it and all he said was that he took it somewhere and had it done, me being stupid at the time, thats all I asked about that. Now, after that whole discussion, I drove the car, it felt like it was bottoming out when I stepped on it hard, at the time I had no idea why it was doing that, the guy said it was happening because it's lowered and something seems to be scraping on the ground, he also said he got it checked and everything looks normal underneath the car, no scrapes so I was thinking wtf, I didn't know anything about cars at the time so engine and transmission mounts didn't even cross my mind. Later on the road driving for about 10 minutes now, he started talking about posi-traction and when he talked about it he would always press the asc button on the center console, I said why are you pressing that and he told me he was turing the posi off. I said no, that's the traction control and he no that's the posi-traction. I explained to him how stupid he is by explaining that posi is a stupid way of referring to an LSD, which he then said he had an LSD with a 3.15 ratio. So drive over he also explained to me how he JUST got the brakes done and how he spent over $1000 replacing them, I thought this was suspicious, but I thought because of his un-intelligence he got ripped off at a shop because it's a BMW. But later after I purchased the car, I looked through all the receipts he gave me and what he said he had done was just an invoice and when I got them replaces there was no pads left and the rotors were all warped in the front.

So now after that story above, what rights do I have regarding law. The only reason I bought the car was because of the supposed LSD which isn't on the car, and the BBS RC rims

Honestly.... you live and learn! not much you can do at this point, shoulda, coulda, woulda is to late once you made deal, unless you have a written contract with any type of guarantee for X amount of miles or such which I doubt been from CL. next time spend a couple of bucks and take the car to a indy shop and have it check out if the person selling is honest they should not have a problem. good luck read the sticky's there is a lot of DIY out there than can help you out.

Caveat Emptor. As sh!tty as it sounds, you got taken for ride. I'm not an ambulance chaser, however, unless you have something in writing, you may have no legal standing. Do you have a copy of the ad? Was the ad vague and all further discussion verbal? No doubt it was "sold as is - where is". You could try small claims court but it may be more trouble that it is worth.
- de-activated the air conditioning seriously ??! *ahem bu11sh!t*
- LSD could of been easily checked by jacking the rear end and turning the wheels.

Life lesson. :dunno: As pointed out above not much you can do.

This is why you have a mechanic check out the car before purchase. You have no legal recourse. Unless you live in a foreign country, like the socialist republic of california, then your feelings may be protected under a lemon law.

Lemon laws do not cover cars over 4 years old. Sad but true. Nothing you can do short of Strong Arm Justice. And that is illegal (only) if you are caught...

And deactivating the AC??? Simply not using it would have the same effect. What an @ss hole the seller was to even think of something like that to say... Hindsight is 20/20. that being said, If you are unfamiliar with any car you are buying have a mechanic you trust go over the car. If the seller is unwilling to let you do that then beware. Man that sucks... I hate to see people get violated like that.

It is so sad the amount of Sorry @ss folks out there. So many of whom will lie through there teeth even if they know that you know better ((

Craigslist is evil at times, i have been lucky cause i hound the crap out of them. unfortunately i have a few extra issues with the 540 that the guy neglected to tell me, or should i say i neglected to ask!! People suck plain and simple. if it sounds to good to be true then it most likely is :/

What is this "law" of which you speak? This is the USA after 8 years of the Bush administration.
