Congratulations. I'll cross a few fingers too.

One last point. I've found over the years that rain sense occasionally refuses to wipe when it should, and others when it wipes when the windshield is dry. This seems to be a result of road grunge (I suspect oil and grime rather than true dirt) interfering with reflection of the IR beams off the glass surface that the RLS uses to detect water. A squirt of two of the windshield washers always cleans the glass enough to restore proper operation.
lol thanks for the extra fingers crossed!

Went out a bit ago and auto wipers still functioning perfectly. Feeling positive!

It is with great excitement that I report back again, day 2, and my rain sensing features are working as designed!

I'm 95% confident the issue is fixed.

Resolution = New RLS and coded correctly in a specific order of operations using NCSexpert and INPA.

Thanks everyone, especially rdl, for vast knowledge dump. If it wasn't for this thread, I would not have been able to do this.

Well done! Did you retrofit the rain sensor? Details if so, please? I got hardware for auto light and rain sensor from a 2001 530. Need to replace the cracked plain windshield glass on my '97 528 and want to take the opportunity to upgrade to rain sensor windshield. Got a deal from local dealer for a new rain sensor green windshield for $450.

I did not retro fit. I'm an e46 owner but the coding and steps were the same. Going from the old RLS to the new one, unfortunately I can't offer any incite.

After almost 6 days and the sensor still working, I'm confident now that my RLS issue is now resolved!
2 1/2 weeks later follow up...

This past week the auto wipe sensing feature decided to stop working again. Same problem as before, initialization error. Worked fine for a week and then back to the same issue as started the whole endeavor.

At this point I believe the problem lays within the GM5 module. Something is wonky. Sadly, I never got to drive in the rain with her. Back to good old fashioned 4 option intermittent. I'm over it :)

Hello.
@rdl, In the first post you shared settings from the RLS module. However, what is the option to enter directly into the RLS module, Not in LCM module to just the activation of automatic headlights?
I want change light sensitivity of the RLS sensor.
Do you know how?

Hello.
@rdl,
...
I want change light sensitivity of the RLS sensor.
Do you know how?
Not really. I'd imagine changing the "FLC_SCHWELLWERT_SATZ", "FLC_SCHWELLWERT_SATZ_2" etc settings would have an effect. That would be from "wert_01" to "wert_02". But I've no idea how much &/or if that would also affect the rain sensing.

You might try making changes and observing the results. The programs to make such changes are:
  • NCS Expert, which reads and writes to the RLS module
  • NCS for Dummies which helps make NCS Expert easier to manage for the casual user (like us)

Yes, I use these NCS and Dummi programs. Is there an option to enter and read data from the RLS sensor itself and not through the LCM module, because I don't see a direct/ separately way to read the RLS sensor settings anywhere?

When one runs NCS Expert, you are able to choose which module to read (or write if that's what you're doing). So choose RLS and that's what you're reading/writing.

I don't understand what you mean by reading the RLS through the LCM.
So far as I know the only RLS related parameter in the LCM is "AUTOM_FAHRL_STEUERG AUTOMATIC HEADLIGHT CONTROL (ALS)" which can be set to "aktiv" or "nicht aktiv". In other words, the LCM should pay attention to signals from the RLS to turn the headlights on/off automatically or alternatively ignore the RLS signals. At least in my LCM there aren't any parameters for RLS sensitivities readable while NCS Expert is communicating with the LCM.

In my case, I don't have the RLS module to read separately / independently, but I have the values that you specified for light sensitivity after read the LCM module.
That's why I asked what is the option / way to read and code the RLS sensor directly, without read LCM.

We must then have different versions of the LCM.
My 530's build data is 20 September 2002

INPA reads my LCM as:
CONTROL UNIT: LCM_III
ID_BMW_NR: 6915919
ID_HW_NR: 2
ID_SW_NR: 43
ID_COD_INDEX: 19

The RLS is found as:
CONTROL UNIT: RLS_DS2
ID_BMW_NR: 6923954
ID_HW_NR: 40
ID_SW_NR: 32
ID_COD_INDEX: 2

FWIW, I find my automatic headlights are turned on quite a while before dark, long before I would turn them on manually. At times they've been turned on during very cloudy days. It's never bothered me particularly. I'd rather have headlights on early rather than too late, too dark.

I would though be curious at your results of changing sensitivities. Please do report back with your results.

After a few days of heavy workload, I was able to find time to try to change the sensitivity of the RLS sensor in LCM dummy file.
The fact is that I do not have the appropriate line with the option to change, which disappoints me a bit.
What could be the reason for this?
Could I add the appropriate value line (FLC_SCHWELLWERT_SATZ and wert_1 - value 2 for example ) if I edit with the text editor FSW_PSW.TRW file?
