If I leave my wipers in the on position, the wipers will cycle then stop without any rain falling. Now they won't come on when it is raining. Anyone know if the rain sensor needs replacing or is it a relay

If you still have the original glass most likely the sensor has bubble, you can take a look into the sensor from outside and see the bubble/delamination. If yes you are screwed, no one has successfully reglue the sensor back to the glass and make it work again.

If you don't see the bubble you can try replacing the electronics circuit behind the rear view mirror.

Some of X5 owners just disconnect the electronics(behind the rear view mirror) and get the speed sensing back but not the intermittent, your choice.
