Thanks for the info on what seems to be a rear bearing on my 1998 528i. Another question.
I'm guessing it is ok to just replace right or left as they deteriorate, therefore no need to replace both at same time. Seems like the process and cost is 2x and no benefit to replace both. Right, wrong, or other advice? THanks.

That would depend on how many miles you have on them.
If it's a lot the other one may not be far behind.
If you don't have the tools to do it yourself you may get a better deal by having both of them replaced at the same time.
You should also have the rear ball joints checked at the same time, they don't last forever either.
