I just purchased an 06 X5 and am new to the BMW world. I have noticed when I release the rear hatch, it just opens about 3 inches. I then push it up manually. Is this supposed to be a full open or is this correct? It seems strange to have a release without a full open.

That's the way it's designed.

Depress center console central unlock
open driver door
exit
shut driver door
try and open rear passenger door - F'in locked (locks unless you leave driver door ajar

You can code this "selective central locking" feature off. If you have the software/hardware...select "=non active".
