I have a 2004 X3 that I am ready to do my first oil change on and I do have a question: How do I reset the oil service reminder?

Can I do it from inside the car or do I need a "tool" to do it inside the engine compartment?

If someone could walk me through it, I would appreciate it. :)

I did do a search and could not find an answer that way, sorry if I overlooked it.

Thanks!

What is the purpose of reseting the oil service reminder if your still within the maintenance time frame ?

Probably has gone past the mileage limit for free service. If memory serves a special tool is needed to reset the indicator.

I would assume that BMW would not make it easy to reset the service indicator yourself - after all, you could then "cheat" and get your free oil changes more often! (although I'm sure that the onboard computer tracks all of that and it wouldn't really be possible to pull one on over the dealer)

If and when and I'm sure some have reset the service indicator it starts at " 0 " again, so how can you cheat and get a free oil change when it takes longer to get to 15,000 miles from " O " miles? Please explain.

You can do it yourself

Search around, I've read on how to do it before but have never done it myself. No tool was required, all you needed to do was put the key in a certain position and push a button or two for a certain period of time. Sorry can't get more specific as I don't remember the details.

On the X3 you do not need a special tool to reset the service reminder. Here is the procedure, courtesy of Petren (search is your friend):

Procedure:

Ignition key must be off

Press and hold the trip odometer reset button in the instrument cluster (left button), and turn the ignition key to the first position.

Keep the button pressed for approx. 5 seconds until one of the following words appear in the display: "Oil Service" or "Inspection", with "Reset".

The service due is shown with "reset" if the coded minimum consumption limit has been reached and resetting is possible. If "reset" is not shown, the minimum limit has not been reached and resetting is not possible.

Press and hold the reset button again until the word "Reset" begins to flash.

While the display is flashing, press the left button briefly to reset the service interval. After the display has shown the new interval the following will appear: "End SIA".

The system can only be reset again after 2.5 gal (10 liters) of fuel have been consumed.

Thank you for your response. The forum is the best "tool" and the consumer knowledge base is truely unlimited.

If you can, please respond to the following. As I went through the process you described, I tried something different. With the ignition key turned to the first position, I held the left button for about 5 secs. As a result, I accessed a series of codes I could cycle through by pressing the left button. x stands for a figure

_XXXX _ _ 1.0
_ _ XXXX _ _ 1.1
XXXXXX 2 _ 1.2
XXXXXX _ _ 1.3
_ _ XXXX _ _ 1.4
XX _ XXX 0 _ 1.5
CS 0 _ 0 _ _ 1.6 or C5? 0 _ 0 _ _ 1.6

XX _ _ XX _ _ 1.7

What are these codes? Which ones can a person reset when performong home maintenance? How to reset these codes?

You feedback will be appreciated.
