Rip Griot question for you

1572 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Dr. Phil
I'm think of speed shine plus some other stuff, but my question is about the cotton polishing cloths the sell with it in a package. Are they any good? Do you use them with your Speed Shine? I have some yellow flannel towels but Al and I agree that they just aren't the best.

TIA for any feed back

PM,
their 12"x 12" 100% cotton (with 100% cotton thread I might add, something folks don't think about when your talking the edges of cotton towels) are great, little on the spendy side, but I prefer them to quality cotton towels, shag type, that you'd buy at better stores that deal in bathroom towels.

They're the perfect size, 12 " x 12", for a single fold and wipe. They're very gentle on the finish.

They're perfect for the Quick detail sprays. I use them for interior cleaning, window cleaning and apply/removing Speed shine and wax. Stay away from Griots yellow Micro fiber towels if you have a dark or black finish, they work good removing polish/wax HOWEVER they leave tiny swirls and I found out why, accidently dropped a cigar ash on one and it MELTED! Like PLASTIC! They tend to leave little shards of what is best described as "fiberglass shards" on the finish, even after several washings.

Incidently, Griots has a GREAT starter kit for only $59 dollars:

I looked at the starter set but to be honest, I don't think I'll ever clay bar myself. I know it isn't very difficult but with the lighter color and my confidence level I'll probably pay detailer if ti ever needs it.

Based on your input I think I'll give the maintain kit a try. I definately am going for a few of the finger sponges for the style 79 cleanings. How does their wheel cleaner and rubber treatment compare to others? I have some One Grand treatment now and am not displeased.

Well, this is just my opinion, but the Vinyl/Rubber Dressing works great but does not last long. You pretty much have to apply it after each washing.(I only use the Vinyl/Rubber dressing on the interior, all of it including the Aluminum trim, as well as the tires and the mudflaps..no rubber trim strip on the Coupes) The Wheel cleaner is good stuff, though it is not a "Spray and rinse" product, it WILL loosen all the dirt, caked on brake dust (you'll see it start streaking the caked-spots) and makes it easier to clean the wheels.

I have their plastic cleaner/dressing too, same rules apply to the Vinyl dressing, must apply it after each washing.

I agree with Rip, these are good products but do not last long.
One good rain and it's toast. I apply weekly or bi-weekly.
I use the vinyl dressing on all the rubber seals (Under hood, Door & Windows, inside trunk) I also hit all the plastic trim pieces with it and the rubber seals around the windshield

Ahh, yes, forgot to add I do them too with the product.

That vinyl dressing is a good all-purpose product, even though it doesn't last long, I still bought a 1/2 gallon of it.

You guys are definately thorough:thumb: Thanks for the input:D
Hey, you bet PM, anytime! Actually Haus is alittle more thorough than I in the winter months...I don't do a complete detail with swaps, etc. until the weather picks up, since its destined to be dirty immediately after raining...can't wait until spring! Thats when thorough detail jobs make it worth your time, because the finished result lasts longer!

I hear you about the waiting for the nicer weather. I'm actually thinking of no cleaning this weekend at all:yikes: Once you go for the first drive it almost back to where you started. Plus the weather here is supposed to be icky. I've scheduled first weekend in April to do full Blitz job, engine cleaning, etc.

Al mentioned he might be getting a porter and converting back to carnuba. After he practices on his Altima I may have to pop down there and make a party out of it:thumb:
