I had this problem back in the fall after owning my 650 vert for 6 months. The dealer made a repair after getting a part from BMW. I've not noticed the problem since, but this is my summer car and I only drove out perhaps 1000 miles since the repair.

Funny that Chad's dealer has a specific cure (part from BMW) while some others are still waiting (per Southy's SA). I finally got around to the lube fix (used a thicker syn grease I applied with my finger - hold the jokes) and it seems to have fixed the problem, or at least it's less noticeable. I don't know how long this will last, but I'm thinking of cancelling my service appointment until my SA has a documented permanent fix from BMW in hand.

The very good service team at my dealer (Westside BMW in Brisbane) sorted this issue out for me. This is what they did under warranty:

Carried out inspection into seat moving. Removed and replaced seat and stripped base, replaced cushion shell and bushes. Rechecked operation. It also mentions a "Grease Campaign".

Cheers

After initially "not finding anything wrong" I had the service manager take a look. He just sat in it and shifted the seat with his body weight forward and back and side to side and I didn't have to say another word - he said totally unacceptable.

A couple days ago they replaced the seat rail (PN 52107309661) and now good as new! Only issue was I lost my two memory settings - not sure if that's because they took the seat out or for some reason the mechanic reset them. I forgot how long it took me to get those right

640 seat movement

I read with interest about others having the same issue as me with the drivers seat already moving after only 18000 miles. My dealer was not interested so I put my mind to the remedy. This is a temp remedy to see how it fares but the initial success seems cheap and effective.
The solution is to take a mild steel angle bracket from a DIY shop. One say 25mm x 25mm x say 2mm thick should do. On one leg cut out a slot approx 15mm wide and 20 MM deep rounding off the bottom to create a fork. This will then push between the bush and the tapered end of the through rod. Fit the bracket to the door side bush as there is clearance above the through rod. Use 2 tie wraps to pass over the through rod and through the hole in the untouched leg of the angle bracket. One tie wrap for securing clockwise and one anti-clockwise. This prevents the spacer fork from falling out. The 2mm spacer now prevents the bush from moving sideways whilst still allowing it to function.
If my solution is unclear in anyway I will post a drawing but hopefully this may help. I would welcome any feedback if others try this.

seat movement

I had this same seat movement problem in my 2012 650i xDrive coupe with 26k miles. I posted a thread about it last fall. The first visit to my local BMW dealership was ineffective, they replaced some seat bolts which did nothing. Their second attempt was when they took both seats apart, replaced the seat frames and a lot of other parts (both front seats, because I requested it). Now, the seat is solid. Huge difference. My seat was moving very badly during cornering. My local BMW dealership did a good job. I had shown them some work orders that others had done from this forum, which helped.
This is a great forum.

640 front seat movement

Following the request from 640ijims here is a drawing of the bracket that I modified and fitted to stop the sideways movement of the front seat. Early days just yet but seems to have cured the problem 100% so far.
Persistence pays. BMW wanted £1650 for a new seat frame. They offered £1400 as a gesture of goodwill and my dealer paid the rest so the temp bracket has been put away just in case the problem re occurs.

BMW 640D Gran Coupe Loose Seat

Hi Everyone,

My first post here, I'm a new boy. :)

I found this forum as my 2014 BMW 640D M Sport Gran Coupe was/is suffering from the driver's seat lateral movement issue. The issue is well described here, a slight, but very annoying, side to side movement in the seat base under lateral load, e.g. going through corners.

My car went in a month ago for this issue and they replaced what they called the 'seat runners' under warranty. It was better for a few days, then the issue came back.

I recently had to get the rear pads done (yesterday) so it went in and I again told them the seat issue was not fixed. I got a call from the SA midway through the day to tell me that they cannot find any fault and that the seat has and I quote 'moving parts' so, this could be normal. You can imagine the retort he got from me on his suggestion that it is normal that the driver's seat on a £82k car moves about.

I told him they were wrong and insisted that either they do, or I will, escalate to BMW UK, for a resolution. I was called back an hour or so later that they had been in touch with BMW UK and parts had been ordered from Germany to replace several 'brackets and fixings' under the seat. No idea what those brackets and fixings are, but, I once they are fitted I will update you all.

Thanks to everyone here for such a great forum.

Nirav1478, assuming a gan coupe seat arrangement is same as my 2014 convert, seat pan replacement ( part # above ) should be fix. Dealer tried seat rails; both sides; minor bit of relief that went away quickly. Pan is the deal.

Hey guys. Sorry it's taken me ages to reply to my original post, but, it took this long to get my car in and fixed. I'm pleased to report that the seat is completely fixed. So, the dealer, Spire Automotive in Ruislip UK, were a little cagey about what they actually replaced but what they did tell me is that they contacted BMW UK and there is a published and recommended fix kit for this issue. I will try to obtain the part numbers and report back.
