Should I Bypass the Heater Core for HG Sealant?

Much to the chagrin of everyone (and the confoundment of those whom I've sternly chastised for even entertaining the thought) - I'm going to try Blue Devil on the HG.

For those who missed my paper towel of compression readings in the handwriting of a 4 year old on bath salts (thank you Ed) they are:
1. 215
2. 185
3. 170
4. 193
5. 220
6. 223

That was on a cold engine. I drained the oil and it was unmistakably tainted with coolant. Thankfully, it appears not to be terrible in the bulk of the oil. Given the compression being within 25% of the high reading, and that there's not just tons of coolant in the oil....

I have decided to proceed with Blue Deviling her. :yikes: :eeps:

Now, I'm going to pull the t-stat prior to this, and I want to ensure I don't get any in the heater core, thus my question:

While I still have the intake mani off, should I just bypass the HC and connect the hose at the back of the block to the hose that runs to the front cutting out the HC? Or is there a way to guarantee that no coolant circulates through the core during the 90 minutes or so this takes?


I really don't want to have to pull the IM again to reroute the coolant hoses, but I want even less to plug the HC.

What say ye all?

i ran for over a year with my heater core bypassed. heated seats ftw. :thumbup:

i say bypass the heatercore while the mani of off and then do your dirty deed. don't worry about it after that.

and just so you know, i worked with a guy that did similar to his e36 and ran it for a few years...so, yeah, i was suprised. it apparently worked...:dunno:

LOL I will definitely want the heater working in January (if I even keep her that long :eeps:). No heated seats here.

I may plop it back together just enough to run without hooking everything up perfectly tight while I do the treatment, and pull it all and hook it up right afterwards. Just sounds sucky. :lmao: Was hoping there'd be some easy way to block the valves that was easily undoable. Oh well....c'est la vie.
The heater control valve stops circulation of the coolant into the heater core so if it's off you don't have any flow into the HC, but who wants the sealant stuff in the control valve. I think your plan to by pass the whole system is best. Since none of your compression readings is low it looks like there's no breach of the HG into a cylinder, but appears there is a breach between a cooling passage and an oil passage as evidenced by the coolant in the oil. The good news, if there is any in this, is that the sealant has a chance of working since the pressure differences between the oil and the coolant are small and the overall pressures are low (relative to cylinder pressures).
True but you also don't want to block that ether, the sealant will gather there and harden besides accidents do happen.:)
