Isn't there a setting in Idrive for brightness?
You need to get over yourself, bud. The question was whether brightness can be user adjusted during the day, as it can be at night. Period. First you told me to read the manual, which I did (it does NOT address daytime brightness. And now you're telling me that even in the absence of being able to adjust the setting, your cars have worked fine. Are you here to exchange ideas and discuss solutions or are you some self appointed forum sheriff? You had absolutely nothing to add to this thread except wiseass remarks.
BEST RESPONSE that BMW will not address: Had 30 BMWs since 1984. This issue started in my 2019 530. No tints and no polarized glasses. BMW has completely removed the daytime control display adjustment from the menu. Instead, they installed an interior light sensor, just over the gas gauge (upper left of instrument cluster) to lighten/darken the screen. This is an issue using the backup camera in shade and on tree lined streets or cloudy days using navigation. It is almost impossible to quickly and safely read anything on the screen. To confirm this, when the screen dims, shine your cell phone light on the upper part of the gas gauge and observe the control screen brighten. In the 2019 530 (idrive 6) I was able to have it coded to put this adjustment back on the menu. I assigned button 6 to go directly there when I needed to adjust brightness rather than go through the menu. In my 2021 X3 I have the same issue. The coding guys didn't have success coding this (idrive 7) and tried it on an 850. I have written and spoken to BMW of NA and they really are not interested. Emails from other BMW owners in Europe have had the same response. I glued a small LED light to the side of the instrument cluster to shine on the light sensor to brighten the screen, but this is only a short time solution when using my backup camera. We need to get together to get BMW to address this. It is also an issue in 2020 X5s.

After days of being mad and reading people complain about this and other people saying they were dumb and people complain about tint i finally found your post and fixed my Brand New 2021 X4 M40i with an Idrive, HVAC and Instrument Cluster that would dim almost too low to read. I have tinted windows and did not notice the issue prior to getting the tint.

I used Bimmercode 4.0 (11767) - 12.1.0 May 2021...

Under Instrument Cluster, Expert Mode, 3007 KI_Dimmung, DIM_DTN, Custom value... Backspace a couple times and input 0x5F.

Finally fixed.

Geesh you gave me some real hope there for a minute. Unfortunately that doesn't work on the G30 5 series :(. The 3007 is a different category on the 5'er (PIA ..something) and DIM_DTN doesn't seem to exist in any of the Instrument Cluster settings (Expert). There must be a corresponding setting somewhere. Hopefully this new info will lead to it.

On my G20 ('19 330i) I have DIM_DTN under 3005 but it reads 0x3F. What value should I add? Is it 0x5F? Does this affect the threshold for changing to amber night displays? I just need to know what DIM_DTN exactly does and if it affects other things related to brightness?

Giving this a bump..

Ran into the same problem here. Bright screen, got the windows tinted (substantially tinted) and then had the iDrive screen so dim and lifeless. The light censor is way too sensitive.

Shone a flashlight onto the censor (its just above the fuel gauge on the left of the instrument cluster like someone pointed out) and POP.. The screens light up again, looking amazing.

Jumped into Bimmercode- and changed the value in 3005 Expert Mode, DIM_DTN from 0x3F to 0x5F, I noticed a slight bump, but not as much as I would've liked. It actually still seemed like the screen was dimming depending on the light censor conditions.

I've just gotten into bimmercode again, and pumped it to 0x7F, which I believe someone said was the max. I'll need to test it out over the next couple of days to see if there was any improvement.

Can anyone else shed any light to if we can turn this light censor off completely- or keep it locked at a particlar brightness?

This drove me crazy and led me to selling my 530 and buying a 740 that didn't have this issue. My 2021 430 does not suffer from this issue and believe this was a "feature" of the 2019 5 series.

Sorry guys, don’t mean to be a pain, I have a 3 series touring(F31) and the auto dim feature on the idrive causes me to not be able to even really see the screen, I’m looked on BimmerCode and for the life of me can’t find the code, I tried to follow instructions in previous post but can’t find that DIM_VARIANT option, any help would be greatly appreciated

When you connect to the BimmerCode app, select “Headunit”, and then in the bottom left you have to select “Expert Mode”. After that, just use the search function at the top to search for DIM_VARIANT.

Even if you can get into the code- and find it- it simply doesn't allow you to brighten the screen to its normal value without a tint. Its not bright. I actually dont know if if even brightens it at all, it may be a placebo.

Even after re-coding, its quite dim- and you can see its full potential when shining your flashlight into the censor, the screens and brightness immediately POP.

I wish BMW would fix this nonsense once and for all.

[Facepalm] Everyone here is telling you the same thing; not sure why you are fighting so hard not to believe us. What you are calling the iDrive screen, BMW calls the Control Display. Look in the owner's manual for the section on Control Display. The manual will tell you how to adjust the brightness. The section is on page 38 of my manual, but may be on a different page in yours.

You're welcome.

HE INSTALLED TINT!!! YOU PIECE OF SHIT. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MANUEL.

None of those links are for the G30. The first isn't even for the iDrive screen, it's for the gauge cluster. Sounds like you installed dark tint that the engineers didn't plan for when they designed the iDrive. Mine works flawlessly, as has the display on every loaner I've ever had. Sounds like you shot yourself in the foot with your mod.
YOUR A “F” WAD. QUACKBERRY. YOUR NAME SAYS IT ALL. WHATS WRONG WITH INSTALLING TINT? THATS NOT A damn MOD. BMW PUT A LIGHT SENSOR IN DASH. IT DIMS EVERYTHING AT NIGHT NO MATTER WHAT SETTINGS YOU HAVE ANYWHERE IN THE CAR. ID LIKE TO BET YOU SKIN AND FACE LOOKS LIKE SHIT RIDING AROUND ALL YOIR LIFE WITHOUT TINT 😂
