Just posted most of these pictures on .org's M3 board where my friend hangs out. Though you guys may get a good kick out of it as well, especially the track junkies:

First off, this was taken on a 3-4 upshift PAST redline...I can only hope that his engine does not blow up, it'll be awfully hard trying to get BMW to warranty this engine:

The cars lining up at the paddock area:

Front straight-away with instructor driving (instructors wear yellow):

Turn 9:

That's an instructor, Monty, in the silver E46 M3 passing the red E30. The guy was simply hauling *SS on the track. Instructors out in their own cars must put the blinkers on:

Enjoy!

Cool

How hot was it out there? I love Las Vegas (home away from home), but I hate going out there in the summer months and it seems hotter this year.

Also, how did the cars and drivers hold up in that heat if any? You don't run with your A/C on I'm sure. I was at a CSCC practice on Sunday and it was hot at the California Speedway.

I gotta try a road course someday. Still debating stick vs SMG and your review got me thinking again, as I was leaning heavily towards a stick.

Actually it was quite cool the first day...In fact it rained in the morning sessions and combined with the high desert wind, it was COLD at times. On Sunday's session it was downright BRUTAL, in the afternoon the temperature registered between 91-96 with desert sun beating down at you. If you're driving it's tolerable since you HAVE to drive with the window down and the rushing wind cools you, but when you're not on the track and not in the classroom, it can get uncomfortable at times.

HACK, your friend needn't worry too much about warranty issues. BMW has, as far as I know, covered every blown engine for those with SMG. The reason is that it is advertised that SMG will not allow a mechanical over-rev, plus the rev-limiter is supposed to cut in at 8000. Thus, if an SMG car has an RPM reading above 8000, it is automatically assumed to be the BMW's problem.

I was only kidding about warranty claims. He knows that his arse is covered to the hilt.

And I'm still skeptical about all the so-called blown engines and how much of it is just internet rumor mill churning hard.

I thought that the M3's rev limiter was supposed to disappear "progessively" as the car warms up? Did this guy just take it full toes right after starting the car:dunno: ? I thought the orange blocks disappeared after the engine warms up:confused:
SMG works a little differently. As you approach 8000 RPMs, the orange lights light up, from right to left. Then at redline, the last one lights up red, meaning, "Shift me now!"
