Sorry Robg,
Just had my retrofit done. I was scared and almost backed out due to your story.

Mines perfect though. Wheel is straight and car tracks great. Awesome, truely awesome. I've sworn off the track till the M comes but I may have to make an exception.

Good to hear. Glad it worked out. I am jealous though.:p Out of curiousity what was the part number of the rack they put in-- actually I only need to know the last 3 digits...

One more favor to ask-- did they give you the alignment print out? If so, could tell me what they set the following to:
Front:
Left and right camber
Left and righ toe

Rear:
Left and right camber
Left and righ toe

I'm trying to eliminate the alignment as a cause of my poor on center feel. When you're going straight down the road can you turn the wheel back and forth about 1/2 an inch without anything happening? Also, have you driven the car on any rough roads or highways where there are lots of trucks? Does it wander? And finally, do yo have the sport suspension or the regular suspension? I think part of my problems may have to do w/ all of the extremely bad roads around here-- which bring out the worst in my steering. I had the car on some nice smooth roads this past weekend and almost forgot about my steering woes. Thanks.

hey Robg

Sorry to hear about the ongoing problem.

I had the benefit of time with the car and it seems that the steering looseness at center is improved. I don;t know what the factory rep did two weeks ago, but it seems that the dead spot is almost nil (90% of the time). It creeps in on occasion on some surfaces.

I know he rechecked the alignment but he couldn'g give me a report. I thought it might help you and PG out but even the dealership doesn;t have the information.

The car definitely is different. Reliability is the issue now. Will this last longer than a month or go back like before? I don;t want to find out.

Awaiting new car anxiously.

I heard PG is getting his new rack today.

Wonder what's going on.

When did you get the factory rep to take a look? Did you just complain to your dealer to get a rep or did you deal w/ BMWNA directly?

Are you actually happy w/ the steering now after the rep "tweaked it". What sort of reliability problems are experiencing? My car (knock on wood) has been solid other than the stupid steering fiasco. PG was having his new rack installed last I heard-- haven't heard an update yet. Good luck with your 2002-- i'm sure you can't wait!

I had an appointment weeks in advance and brought in the car. The same day, the dealer I am purchasing from (another dealer) said that a "deal" was approved on a trade with my car. So I went with the new car.

The new steering is much much improved but still light in the middle over various road surfaces and air temperatures. Can't explain it. Now I've gotta yank my tires off my car before it goes back next month. I guess I'll just store them or put them on the coupe or our Z3.

Have a rep look at your car. I know they did something to it. ??RE-torqued the mounting bolts ??RE-alignment ??

Let me know.

awesome

Haus-when you say the steering is awesome you truly can't mean that.if you go into the archives and read some of my posts you will see what I 'm talking about.IMO the boost is still to light at higher speeds to get good road feel like you got in the older bmw's before they started fooling around with the steering.

Ok,
Yes Vern, it's not like an older BMW. Compared to what it was it's a huge improvement. I've only gotten it up to 80 so far.

I'll get that for ya.

I didn't get a printout but I'll call them and see if they have it.

No, it's very tight.

Also, have you driven the car on any rough roads or highways where there are lots of trucks? Does it wander?

I-90 which I drive is one of the ways across the pass and ALL the semis drive it, it's awful. Ruts so deep the riceers hit bottom. The car tramlines some but not any more than it did with the othe rack.

do yo have the sport suspension or the regular suspension?

Yes, I have the Sport Suspension.

Thanks for your help 'haus. I really appreciate it. Based on what Rchoudry said, i'm also going to try and get a BMW rep to perform the magic incantations on my steering that they did on his car.
