Please help! I have a 99 328i and recently the motor is making a sound like a playing card in a bicycle wheel. It is intermittent and unpredictable. I just got it out of the shop as they thought that it was a bad timing chain tensioner but that wasn't it. Has anyone had a similar experience? If so, what was it?

I have just over 100k miles on it.

I had a 2000 Jetta that had that same sound, intermittent and then all the time. It was the A/C compressor. You may want to check that as I have heard of many 99 328's having A/C problems. Try running your car with the A/C off and see if it still makes the sound, in my case if I turned the A/C off it didnt make the sound. Hope this helps....

I would take it IMMIDIATLEY to have it looked at by a trusted BMW specialist. That doesn't sound good and I would guess that it is doing some damage to your car…

Mine does that at times, there is tape on a wiring harness that runs in front of the cooling fan on the front of the car that unwinds from time to time getting into the fan blade. I trim it or tape over it and it holds for awhile then gets back into the fan again.
I see zip ties in its future but havent had the time to get some.
