Quick question, I currently have 19" on my 2015 x5 5.0 and switching to 20" Rims with non run flat tires and was wondering if I can use one of the 19s as a spare without issues.

Tires for an xDrive BMW need to be the same diameter or you will damage the drive system. I would think that even though they might be the same diameter, the weight difference between the two sizes could damage the drive system too.

Assuming they are the same diameter, no problem. Do make sure whatever 20-inch rims and tires you choose are the same as your 19's or else your speedometer will be off. The other problem is where are you going to keep it? A full-sized wheel and rim won't fit under the cargo floor.

Overall diameter/circumference is what you need to pay attention to. Regardless if you have 19”/20”/21”/22” wheels & tires....BMW‘s spare tire kit comes with a 19”X 5” wheel & a 155/80/19 compact spare tire...and is designed to be run with any of the optional (recommended) wheel/tire combos offered for the f15 X5.

Your owners manual lists the BMW recommended wheel/tire sizes...look in the section that gives the recommended tire pressures.

And as mentioned above...the spare tire compartment won’t take a full size spare...so you’d have to secure it above the cargo floor as it takes up precious cargo space, too.

The info below is from the BMW TIS in regards to Tire/Tyre exchange. The section on AWD vehicles that mentions ”mixed wheels” is referring to the staggered set-ups where the front wheel is not as wide as the rear wheel...so the tires have a staggered size recommendation (again, the recommended sizes are listed in the owners manual for the staggered set-ups). A tire size calculator (easily found with a google search) can help determine if your tires (and wheels) are within spec if you decide to use something other than the BMW recommended tire sizes.

Our GO1 X3's OE spare tire is a different diameter than the other four tires. The owner's manual is vague about the effect of having a smaller diameter tire, only saying that it could change the driving characteristics of the vehicle.

I stumbled on some BMW training documentation that says that modern xDrive logic will disengage the AWD to prevent damage when a small-diameter spare tire is installed.

The stock BMW 19" rim/tire combo has PRECISELY the same OD as the stock BMW 20" rim/tire combo.

Feel free to use the old 19" as a 'full size' spare for your 20" set up.

period.

G01 X3 spare

The spare's rolling diameter is two inches less than the four tires. The older F15 might not have the xDrive spare tire logic, not necessary due to the full size diameter spare..

I'm not sure a full size spare will fit in the spare tire well. I know you CAN get a temporary (compact) spare. It would be nice if, like the first-gen E53, you could fit a full size, matching spare in there.
