Since I don't drive my X5 like my Z4, the Comfort seats are the way to go. As for looks, the only other people who can see you are drivers in other SUV's. You'll have to drive an X5 with each seating for the best comparision. After our comparision, we decided to pay the extra for the comfort seats and we haven't regretted it since.
Sat in all seats before buying...not a big difference to me at all. It's an SUV, not a racecar. But, you should just go sit in them and see what you think. If you are buying a car from BMW, they won't mind entertaining your curiosity and letting you try each seat they have.
Just picked up my 2005 X5 4.4...it included the sport package with sport seats. I tried both seats and ended up ordering the sport seats as I found the extendable thigh support, firmer cushioning and better side bolstering to be important for my driving comfort. I love them.
