I'm extremely confident that it will quite be the bomb when it finally is unmasked, especially with 20" alloys that I'm sure that it can be fitted with, and not to mention will look particularly good in darker colors and will i-drive like a cross between the 3, 5 and 7 series.

Also, I'm sure it'll be fine once we all have a chance to get used to it.

Have I got the mantra of the BMW spin doctors down, or what?

Why do I get that sinking feeling that this company is beginning to resemble the voyage of the Titanic when it comes to design style?

Open note to BMW AG: Return the design of this marque to someone from the Fatherland. Designers that live in America obviously are unequal to the task, unless of course you prefer something that looks like a casket.

Nice one Alex! When did you take the pic? ;)

Pple!! C'mon, it's too early to conclude anything at all. Chill out, drink some green tea, read a novel... :D
Too early? I think not. If there had been one aberrent styling mistake to come out of BMW in the past few years, I would agree that it was too early to pass judgment on the new 6. But let's look at the evidence, shall we?

-Z9
-Z9 convertible
-X Coupe
-E65
-CS1

That's five separate instances of "the hand of man" "taking us where we don't want to go." Five instances of droopy noses, flared grilles, stretched headlights and flame surfaces. What's worse, there have been no bright spots; no styling released that makes me say, "Hey, that's not bad."

So, given recent history and the spy shots of the 6 I've seen so far, I don't think it's too early at all.

It may already be too late.

Aye, here we go again, JST! :D

Hmm..either it's a generation gap thing or we are seriously born on different planets. In either case, it all boils down to personal tastes. I sincerely do love the new designs, including the concept CS-1. I am not kidding nor am I saying this to please Chris B. If there is one BMW I must hate, that would be the X5s. I hate SAVs, SUVs, SUTs and whatever comes between. I did give my thumbs up to X5 4.6is simply because the engine is designed by Alpina.

Just two days ago, I saw the E65 again on the road. It is no doubt a magnificent piece of machine. Hey..I love the E36s as much as you do! See!! :D

I think this thread is proof that Vince is in the minority here. The automotive press also seems to agree with the majority here when it comes to the stuff on JST's list, as well.

One thing I did notice that's positive(?) about that 6er is that the roofline looks an awful lot like a 911.

Don't think it's a generational thing; after all, we agree on New Order and the Pet Shop Boys.

It does come down to a matter of taste, and though I think you're both nuts, I understand that the Hand of Man appeals to you and Alex. I remember when Dodge introduced the 1994 (?) Dodge Ram, with its controversial Kenworth styling, the guys at Chrysler (it may have even been Lutz) said something like: It's a polarizing design, and we don't care if 50 percent of the people don't like it, because 50% of the people will, and it will establish us as clear leaders.

BMW is saying the same thing with the Hand of Man. Unfortunately, I think the ratio of love:hate is a lot lower than 50 percent. Every piece of automotive design is a balance between the bold and the derivative. I appreciate boldness in automotive design; I was one of the few people who thought the 96 Taurus should be given a chance to become familiar.

Unfortunately, as with the Taurus, I think Bangle has just gone too far in trying to be bold, and has excised so many of the derivative elements that many people simply don't have any aesthetic handholds on his designs. There's nothing there for the average person to relate to. A well-balanced design sweeps people up and brings them along; a poor design just strikes out on its own. IMHO, and in the HO of nearly every other commentator, BMW's latest styling efforts fall well into the latter category.

I agree about the 911 comment. Unfortunately, only in the sense that 9-1-1 should be dialed on a phone in reference to Bangle and Hooeydunk's designs.

They are indicative of classic signs of substance abuse on the part of the designers. Not sure what chemical we're talking about, but their designs sure 'crack' me up.

Actually guys, if you comapre the rear end of an E31 8-Series it's not that far off.

You seem to be overly eager to bash the hell out of everything BMW does. Maybe it's just me, but I think you need to calm down a bit. It's just a car company, there are plenty more to choose from.

Just my $0.04 (damn Canadian exchange...).
