I have a 1998 528i with almost 150k miles on it. Im not sure if the original clutch was ever replaced (used to be my dads) but whenever I press it in I hear a squeak coming from underneath the car.

While we're on the topic of transmissions, my shift-knob has to much play. I would like it to not move around as much. If I by a new one, should I go right for a SSK?

my e36 m3 used to do that, most prevelant in the summer, and my 540 does it now but just very slightly. there is nothing you can lubricate under the car, its a hydralic system. you could try replacing the slave cyl, but most likley its the t.o. bearing. if you wanted to replace that you'd have to drop the trans etc so you might as well just replace the clutch. live with it till the clutch needs to be replaced.
