The car detected a error, has logged the error in memory, but just told you- the owner- to contact the service center.
They can then charge you $200-300 to then give you a list of parts they home will fix the issue.
If you have a BMW -compatible scanner, something that will read BMW codes and access BMW modules (not just generic OBD codes) then you can save some $$$. People here can maybe steer you will be better prepared when you go to the dealer/mechanics.
