heres everything that will cause play in the steering when bad: tie rods, rack and pinion, pump, control arm bushings, wheel bearings, struts, steering shaft joints, and ball joints. always start with the easiest tie-rods, then go to the ball joints, control arm bushings, wheel bearing, rack and pinion and so on. also, under inflated tires can cause play.
