Well the SCCA kicked off the season this year with quite the turn-out at our local chapter (Finger Lakes Region, NY). Around 200 cars showed up! Here are some pictures and videos of the event:

Note that I finished 2nd out of 9 in D-Stock, up against many-a-WRX. :D

Some teasers:

:bigpimp: Good times for all!!

Chris, can't start the second and third video. (first run is ok)

EDIT : OK, problem solved
Alex, what was the problem?
I first clicked on the first run video. It started to load and played it with QTime. As I clicked on the second it loaded again but didn't play.

So, I downloaded both videos (Save target as...) and played them on the WMP. It worked :)

Normally mpg files are played with WMP automatically on my system.
Ah cool. My apologies for the garbage quality; I didn't have the video camera out there so we used the digital (still) camera. Next time will be better I promise! :D
Cool! :thumb:
Congratulations

Good job. You know of course, you can run R-Compounds in D-Stock. They improve your times by 2-3 seconds on a 60-70 second course. I use Kuhmo Victoracer V700s. I love the grip and I don't want to run street tires anymore unless I have to.

Stay in DS for awhile. I now run in Street Modified at SCCA events and that is a class where a supercharged e46 M3 is legal. Very tough to win anything and these days, a guy in a modified Camaro SS on racing tires is cleaning up. I can't better than 3rd in this class. Wait till I get my M3 though. Then I'm going to really kick butt.
Cool!

Nice Vid!! Where was this held again? I think they hold these locally at Univ. Buffalo (might not be the SCCA though).

Congrats on 2nd place! :thumb: :D
Very nice Chris!! The vid looks great for coming from a digital camera :thumb:

Nice move getting 330 as your number :D

Yeah, I think 330s are very well classed in D-stock; S4s can still be faster, but WRXs just don't seem to be well-suited to the autocross environment. It probably has to do with turbo lag (and someone at a recent SCCA event here was mentioning that the gearing on the WRX is short enough that they frequently have to shift to 3d, where other cars can do the whole course in 2d).
Looks like you had a lot of fun. I sucked in Sunday's event. Due to the slick, cracked up surface and my crappy driving (maybe due to road course training :dunno: )

I'm suprised that an M5 would be so decked out for auto-x. Do you know what suspension mods it had? They are big, but quite capable. I auto-x'ed Jan. 6th in an M5 and came in mid pack in SS. Behind a lot of good Corvette drivers, but slightly faster than an E46 M3 with a much more expienced driver (probably due to the nealry bald Conti's :p) People were suprised when I told them that it weighed well over 4000lbs :bigpimp:

I like the track a lot more :dunno:
Hey thanks guys. It was definitely a good time.

Shinobi, I agree r-comps are the way to go. I'm debating whether or not I want to go down that path, as I'm still learning (this was my first RWD autox) so we'll see. Are you not allowed to run in Street Touring? What keeps you out of that class?

Ackster, it was at RIT. That parking lot is basically brand new! You shoulda seen it last year, uhg. I think the Western NY SCCA group gets out to UB but I'm not sure.

nate, it was about 35 degrees for us so everyone was slippin around the track. Even the r-comp boys couldn't get very good traction. That M5 was part of the "One Lap of America" race, hence the suspension mods. I didn't catch the particular company who made it though. It's a pretty cool race, kinda like a rally except you race around the country and hit different tracks. I'd love to get out on a track someday. :thumb:

Damn! 35 degrees! It was in the mid 80s on Sunday :p

I assumed that M5 was built for a road course, M5s aren't the greatest Auto-X cars :thumb:
Chris,

Have you ever taken your car out to Cayuga Drag Strip in Canada? I have taken my motorcycle there to drag and it is a blast! It only costs about $20 Canadian (approx. $0.27 American) :D so it is really cheap and you can race all day long. The wait for the cars can be pretty long (15-20 min in between races). It takes almost no time in between races for Motorcycles. They don't have to wait in line with the cars and there usually aren't as many of them. I probably will take the BMW to this strip sometime this summer and see what I can do.
nate, yeah we had a f#$%ing cold front roll through. It sucked!

Ackster, I've been out to a local strip here with my old Civic, but never with the bimmer. That's definitely on the list of to-do's! I'm curious to see how well she does. :D
Is the local strip 1/8th or 1/4 mile? Cayuga is a 1/4 mile strip which makes it much more fun. The 1/8th mile strip that is close to me is too short IMO.
It's a 1/4 mile... I think a 1/8 would be way too short. In my Civic I'd hit about 90mph at the end of the gates, and we all know how fun it is to legally go anywhere over 80mph. :D

I think I'll make it past 100mph in the bimmer. I'm hoping for a high 14s run.
I've never taken any car on the strips but with my bike I have posted low 12's at about 117. My bike will do it quicker, I just have a really bad reaction time. :p I always feel like if I rip on the throttle, I will be riding a wheelie down the course. . .

I have seen some pretty amazing cars at the track that put my bike to shame. A lot of guys bring their cars on the back of trailers and some even have chutes.:dunno:

Yes, learn on your streets first. Not to mention go ahead and waste em. I cannot run in Street Touring because I have a Throttle Body/Dinan Stage III software, my wheels and tires in the rear are over the maximum allowed (max is 7.5/225 while I have 8.5/245), and I'm running R-compounds with a treadwear of 50 (minimum must be 140).

Again, stay in DS and get more seat time before making any performance mods. The 330 is already a great car and you should be successful :)
