I just bought a 2002 530i with a sunroof that is not working.

I took it apart today to get more information as to what is wrong with it and was able to determine that the motor gear is slipping where it turns the cable. What I cannot tell is if the gear on the motor is stripped or the cable is stripped. When I try to use the sunroof, it winds up slipping on one of the two cables, makes the most horrible noise and does not function.

Does anyone have any exeperience with a similar problem. Should I try replacing the motor assembly (with the new gear) first or do I need a new cassette?

TIA

If youre under CPO warranty, take it to the dealer, they will fix it at no cost (-$50 deduct.)

No under warranty. Car is a salvage rebuild from a pass carparment fire. I suspect that the current casette is much older than the car. Anyone know how to change the cassette?
