Guys please help! My sunroof is stuck in the open position. And YES I have tried every reset mentioned ...held up the middle button for 2 mins..nothing..also tried the other two options on the button...nothing..sometimes I heard a relay click a few times in the area where the sun/moon roof switch is..but no action anywhere. Sunroof won't move an inch!! No obvious obstructions anywhere that I can see. I live in an area where it snows..and I am stuck with an open sunroof! Please help...and again, I have tried pressing all three switch positions multiple times for more than one full minute with both, engine running and engine turned off...HELP! Thank you!!!

I don't know if you got this function where you live, but you could try closing it using the key fob.

Lock the car using the remote and keep pressing the close button on the remote. The windows and sunroof will start to close after a couple of seconds. Keep pressing until all windows and sunroof are closed.

Key Fob remote is an Non-American option, unless you got it coded on the side unfortunately :(

My moonroof button needed it's whole console replaced a couple of weeks too.

Is this the procedure you use?

Initializing your sunroof.

Put your fob in the slot and turn the car ON (ie don't start it - but push the start button with your foot OFF the break/clutch)

Now, push and HOLD the sunroof button up (vent position). After about 15-20 seconds, the sunroof will vent. CONTINUE HOLDING THE BUTTON UP. After another couple of seconds, 15 or so (could feel long, but keep holding) , the sunroof will close, the open completely, then close completely.

Once the sunroof has closed completely, the process is over. It's important that you do not let go of that button while the process is happening.

TheXMen...it worked!!!! Thank you so much. It did work but not like any other way I've read so far...I was trying the same thing yesterday after getting the error message and nothing. Woke up today , and it worked although in a different fashion. Here's what happened...I turn on the ignition..engine is off..battery power on...press and hold the tilt button up for 15 seconds..and the sunroof opened up ALL the way...ibdont remove pressure off the button and keep it pressed down for 15 more seconds...nothing..sunroof is still wide open...I keep pressing the button down for another minute ...nothing and now my sunroof is wide open..I let go of the switch praying it works...the. I proceed to close the window using the close switch...not tilt...and voila...it closes all the way...! Now I was scared so I didn't bother to test it again to see if it opens again or not..but now my sunroof and visor are closed and I'm not going anywhere near the button!!!

I cannot thank you folks enough for chiming in!! Love this forum..thank you!!!

Recently had the same problem. Problem occurred after took car back from dealership after 20,000 mile oil change and service, including replacement of battery. Found your post in this forum and fixed the problem. Thanks X-Men. Good thing I searched this forum before running down to see the SA at the dealership like they told me to.

Sorry to revive an old thread. I am having the same problem. It's the first time I am opening the sunroof after getting the car back form dealer for a battery replacement. One touch did not work, so held it to tilt and open the roof cover. Now it's stuck in the tilt position and the error message is on the Idrive. I know it needs to be reset, however I have tried the method mentioned here several times, but no luck. Any other ideas?

Update - Everything I tried did not work. So took it to the dealer. Apparently, they had to do a reprogram and/or initialization of the battery. Something was not done correctly when they put the new battery in. All working fine now.

At least this time I lost the programmable memory presets. I was surprised when they were still there when they first replaced the battery 2 weeks ago.

Pull the battery for a few minutes. Plug back and then try to close the sun roof?

I've tried every suggestion, every one and nothing works.
Going to ask my indy guy if his equipment can diagnose the sunroof. I have a feeling it's the switch and am about to take the plunge, what's another hun' after what this thing's cost me.

I know this is an old thread...but even going back to the posts from 2015...the instructions are in your owners manual on how to reinitialize the sunroof...and it also mentions that a reinitialization will be needed when power is disconnected from the car (like replacing the car’s battery).

These instructions where in every BMW I’ve owned that had an electric sunroof (e32/e34/e38/e39/e53/f06/f15). :)

Hey everyone, i have a problem with my sunroof, first it stuck in closed position, then i found that reset trick but it didn’t work, now my sunroof sometimes fully opens and goes in tilt position, but it takes like 20-30 tries to open and then same to close, but the shade doesn’t run at all. Sometimes when I try reset again relay clicks few times and nothing happens. Anyone has any idea how to fix it?

Pleasw help ! My sunroof on my 745li is stuck open. I haven't open it in forever and last night I decided to tilt it then when I got home I tried to close it and nothing, so this morning I watched a video how to manually close it with the tool in the trunk and it did a little something so now it came down a little from tilted and stuck that I can't even manually do it cause it's stuck. I tried to slide it shut from the close button but it barely move a little then went back a little. I also tried the initialize process by holding down the button but nothing works. Please help !

Just wanted to add a data point -- The sunroof reset procedure wouldn't work for me (2012 wagon) unless the engine was ON. Otherwise the car would give a low battery warning and/or automatically shut off fully while I was still pushing the sunroof vent button. With the engine on I was able to complete the sunroof procedure and now my sunroof works perfectly.

(Thanks to covid pandemic, this car gets so little use it's battery is perpetually low.)

I dont have one! I have used the internet and appears its 5 and 12 but i tested all including those two and they have electricity. Yesterday i changes the switch panel and the motor and still. Same code shows in the panel and no response from the sunroof to move nowhere. I did all the resets in this forum and still nothing work.

Thank you Nine90! Will check those three fuses F62, F25 and F7 using the attached diagram. Hope this diagram works as i found two slightly different in the internet for my N52 engine. Will look for the original fuse chart in my the owners manual (or maintenance manual, not sure where is at) as well more careful.
OMG @TheNine90 you dont know how MUCH I appreciate your guidance!!! You were 100% correct, fuse #25 was missing most likely a friend lost it when he was fixing another issue i had before (which was exactly what i was feeling) abd at the time he was having difficulty reaching out the fuses even falling from his hand... "i was terrified". Well thats why i love to di all my mechanic, but when it comes to electrical i am still learning. I am soooo happy no faulty codes in my screen anymore, just like i love it!!! Thank you!!!! Thank you!!!! Thank youuu!!!!

PS. The reset in this forum worked perfectly after the fuse was installed!

love you BMW enthusiasts! Have a wonderful Sunday!

I need some help good people. I bought a 2017 BMW X1 28i Sdrive. The panoramic sunroof one touch switch will not work. When I hold the switch for 15 seconds to reset, the upper part opens all the way and closes all the way, but the shade opens only close to the middle and stops. The reset does not finish initialization. Is there any other way to fix this problem, and will disconnecting the battery cables for a few minutes fix the problem? Thanks.

Disconnecting will reset the modules. You can try initialising after disconnecting battery.

The initialisation is carried out through the switch of the panorama glass roof.
The switch must be operated in the "vent position" direction during the entire process.
Panorama glass roof can be initialised in any position.
Initialisation:
  • Switch on ignition.
  • Press and hold the switch in the "vent position" direction
  • Initialisation occurs after approx. 15 seconds
  • first the panorama glass roof closes depending on the position
  • Panorama glass roof opens and closes once completely
  • Initialisation of the panorama glass roof is completed
  • the roller sunblind closes next
  • Roller sunblind opens and closes once completely
  • Initialisation of the roller sunblind is completed
  • release switch when the roller sunblind is closed

You can also use diagnostic tool to initialise the sunroof.

So, I disconnected the negative cable for about 25 minutes. I then reconnected the cable. I held up the vent button for 15 seconds. The panorama glass opened and closed all the way, but the shade open 1/4 and stopped and did not finish reset/initialization. The results are the same as before. I can open the shade little by little all the way. Just the one touch switch doesn’t work as intended. Please tell me if am missing any step in initialization. Thanks.

Initialization
Initialization must be performed on the panorama glass sunroof anytime the MDS looses positioning of the glass panels or the headliner or if the any component of the sunroof assembly is replaced.
The control button is pressed and held in the position to tilt the sunroof. Initialization begins approximately 15 seconds after pressing the button. The initialization process may take over 2 minutes to perform.
Note: The control button MUST be held in the tilt position during the entire ini¬ tialization process. Failure to hold the button will result in the initializa¬ tion procedure to be cancelled.
During initialization the panorama sunroof will operate as follows:
• Both sunroof panels enter tilt position(Headliners enter Vent Mode)
• Both Headliners open
• Both sunroof panels lower
• The front sunroof panel opens then closes
• Both Headliners close

Hello guys! I have tried to make my sunroof react but none of the reset procedures work. Do anybody knows if there is a relay or what fuse is for 2011 BMW 128i Coupe?
Ive had a few BMW and all have done this problem along the way. Every time the reset fixed the issue until the most recent last month. I have a 2013 535xi. I tried the reset and it moved a bit then went back to the fully open position. Checked the fuses, disconnected the battery and tried a reset with no success. Finally did a slow/trickle charge on the the battery over night and the sunroof worked the next day. So, it seems a low battery will impact the operation of the sunroof.
