hi

i have some rattly tappets and wondering how they work i have had a look under the rocker cover and they are not adjustable, so do they adjust by putting thicker shims in or should the adjust themselfs (it also needs a oil change) i am going to flush it as well also what oils best for a DIESEL

Think you have hydraulic lifters which are not adjustable at all

They are notorious for tapping (mine do)

You can get WINNS HYDRAULIC LIFTER TREATMENT which may help but once they go, it is hard to stop them tapping without replacing them which is very expensive (around £600) as you need to remove the cam to get to them :(

removing the cam isnt hard is it not just a case of there been shims under them like my citroens ?

i'll give stealership a ring mon morning if no-one knows

The lifters cant be fixed buddy, 99% sure of it...sorry :(

sounds like the tappets where would the chanin tensioner be.

the real problem i have is i cant get a manual for this engine even the bentley doesnt cover my car. tis does bu tis not up to much, if i know the cam gaps i would test them.
anyway should be doing a oil change new turbo and some new injectors today

Dont think any of that is adjustable buddy, though i maybe wrong

Did you say....turbo? Has your stock one gone bad?

What oil you using?

not getting a lot of power dropping down into 3rd to get up some hills but it has never been powerful since i got it, if you remember i bought it in a terrible state.
i have replaced diesel pump, brakes, interior, 3 doors 2 wings 2 tyres, glove box, 2 door trims, steering wheel, keys, cig light (just for the sat nav) 2 tyres, egr valve, battery, starter motor.

jobs to do

oil change, using miller engine flush first (best oil ? remember its a diesel)
clean abs sensors keep faulting (best way to do this ?)
change turbo (got a spare)
injectors to replace (got them just not had time)
need cover that goes under rear of engine (mine was smashed to bits)
tappetts
fix fuel flap regulator (mines stuck in)
good waxing (see if your mam will pop up to near newcastle and do this for me)

and some others i cant remember

should get it done in one whole day if weather stays fine

Are worn tappets something that can cause the engine to destroy itself? Or do they just become looser and looser and tick more without actually being a major problem? What kind of mileage do they start to become a risk if ever?

100k or more they can start to go, but if a previous owner used crap oil, it can be sooner

They dont do any real damage, just get louder and louder until they fail

how do they fail?

are we talking the same things here?

mine are caps that go under the cam and onto something might be able to post a pic tommorrow

i do have the m41 engine and its a 1998

yes its number 2 on that drawing thing is i know its not there but you would have thought there would have been a shim in there to alter the lifter but there isnt possibly the engine flush and good oil might help.

i do have a spare set of lifters as well if one is cracked or something

here's the latest on this

oil flush does help but the important thing is the valve lifter if yours goes it can be reconditioned in a few ways firstly test the clearences for the cam to see which one is making the noise as its normally one according to the dealership machanic, then you can either clean it out from inside with something like parrifin (doesnt always work) or just replace it for here goes only £15.97p plus vat direct from the dealership which is what they do as they say that the lifter collapses inside and you normally need a new one unless they say your cam is very worn.

hope this helps someone mind you, you do need to take the cam out to do this or keep flushing with that oil and you may get lucky

take the cam out fairly simple i didnt know the torque settings so tried them tight to set the torque wrench then they just lift out from under the cam drop new ones in and tighten cam back up.

not to sure about your pirate but mines a straight 4 i heard yours is similar but check it out.

i took the rocker cover off to see first and it look fairly simple. ( i have rebuilt other types of engine so i know a little but wouldnt have tried it if i was a nebie to machanics.
