when you bought it?

I’m itching to ditch my 4Runner and I think I may have found a possible replacement from a private seller - '98 M3, 3.2L, manual.

The car looks very clean.

Have you driven it yet? Addictive isn't it?

My '98 was originally purchased in October of 1997. But at the time I purchased it CPO in October of 2001, it had 26,005 miles on it.

IIRC, Sean (of this board and bimmer.org) is currently looking at a '98 w/ ~19K miles. I was happy to find one as low as 26K (most I saw had over 45K).

My paint is flawed in a few places, but since I plan on tracking it (and am NOT a detailing freak) that mattered less than the condition of the mechanicals (which was great).

Feel free to email me with any other specific questions (or post them here to piss off Nate and Alex).

Correction: 18,000 miles. :)

The asking price is somewhat steep for a car the is not a CPO car. :thumbdwn:
What is the asking price, if you don't mind?

um, don't pay too much for an e36m3.

i just checked the roundel classifieds.

there are 6 E46M3s for sale.

there are about 20 e36m3's for sale.

there is a huge surplus of them, so please be EXTREMELY choosy. i also know that mine (silver) is floating out there with 25k in body work. caveat emptor!

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm not in a hurry and plan to take my time in finding the right car/deal.

Re: Re: TD, what was the mileage on your M3...

I wish Archer lots of luck with his E36 M3. Regardless of what he may say about it, it won't piss me off. Even if he says it's MUCH better than his E46 (like I've said before, it's not exactly "fair" to compare an M car to a non-M car - at least not a previous generation M car).

Now, what I can't stand is one's constant attacks to a more sophisticated platform using lame arguments like weight, etc (see http://www.bmwfest.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3856), or even worse, assumptions (TOTALLY empirical data) when it comes to the E46 M3.

The 98 E36 M3 sedan I was considering is now out of the running. I called my insurance company (USAA) and there is too much of an increase in the premium between my 01 330Ci and the 98 M3. I would be a fool to sell my 330Ci that is almost two years old for a car that will be 5 years old at the end of this year and pay more money to insurance it than a newer car. USAA states the E36 M3 Sedan is a High Performance automobile even though it only has 15 more hp and 32lb ft. more torque. The Ci is a coupe which generally brings a higher premium than a sedan.

Also keep in mind. I'm 30, married, have a child and also get a mulit-car discount and low mileage discount.

Oh wait, I forgot to add one more thing to my previuos post.

It's my understanding Archer is using the money he's going to make selling the SUV to buy the M3...

Now, I'm willing to bet that if it was enough to buy an E46 M3, he wouldn't think twice... Actually, 99.9% of this board wouldn't... Heck, I think not even JST would give up an E46 M3 in favor of an E36 M3, although there's still a fat chance he would do it. Anyway, the percentage of people who would NOT would still be around 99.85%.

You're probably right. TD is the one with the real distaste for the E46. I don't mind it as much; I liked my 323 well enough. My biggest objection to the E46 M3 (aside from the fact that the hard top only has two doors) is cost/benefit related: I just don't think it's worth the money. If someone gave it to me free, I'd probably keep it.

OTOH, I could probably sell it and with the money buy an M3/4 and a 95 OBD I M3 to use as a track car...

I changed my home e-mail address last night (too much spam) and am in limbo until I hear from Jon or Clem. I want to keep my username, and slacker status.

That said, if the E46 M3 was offered in a sedan flavor, I would most likely have one in the garage already. After all, the 330i is technically the wife's car and she was set on 4 doors... women.

I have to say that the choice between an E46 M3 and an old M3/4 would be a tough one for me. I hate coupes. :) I just don't see ANY benefit to purchasing a coupe over a sedan. You get: higher price, higher weight, less stiffness, those huge doors that are a real PITA in tight spaces, additional attention from cops...
OTOH, that's just my opinion. :)
